Show A BAD CASE OF JINGOISM Senator John Wilson of Washington Washing-ton state writes the New York Journal as follows about the search of two Cuban Cu-ban women by Spanish officials on the I steamer Olivette The outrageous search of those two Cuban women should be investigated at once by the state department An indemnity should also be demanded The American flag should protect all passengers on an American ship I am an annexationist boldly and above board I would have Cuba if I could In fact I think we should annex an-nex in some way or other all the countries coun-tries on this hemisphere Go up even and take Greenland with all her ice Send the other fellows back across the water where they belonsr War is a terrible thin but I do not know hut it is a good thing All the territory we have acquired has come through war in some shane or other and the republic re-public has broadened and strengthened I would purchase when we could but I would set hold of all the islands owned by European powers some way or other I think a warshlo should have been sent to Havana at the outbreak of the Insurrection not to Intimidate but to guard American interests We need one there now and should have it Such aix outrage as this should not pass unnoticed or unpunished We will hear of trouble with Spain yet The senator from Washington it is painfully evident is suffering from a severe attack of jingoism So severe is the attack that he seems to have entirely en-tirely forgotten to lug in anything about the Monroe doctrine This is almost unpardonable particularly in view of tho very large task that Senator Sen-ator Wilson would have this country undertake He would annex Cuba if he could Apparently it would make not the slightest difference to him that Cuba might object The Cubans desire independence in-dependence not annexation Senator Wilson would annex them willynilly Sending the other fellows across the water is a verv easy thing to say a most difficult thing to do Such talk as this of Senator Wil sons is foolish in the extreme It tends to put the nation in a false light and it gives us a reputation for disregard disre-gard ot the rights of other nations when ther are just as sacred as our own It alienates sympathy and kind feelings and does nothing but harm That it does not represent the true feelings of the American people cannot be known to foreign governments |
