Show IMMIGRATION BILL IS PASSED I It Is Now Awaiting the Action of Grover the Great A IMPORTANT MEASURE SOME OF TH MODIFICATIONS ACCEPTED I COMMITTEE I House Affirms Its Intention to Abide by the Policy of Limiting Pensions Pen-sions For Widows of General Offi cers to S50 a Month and Grading From That Sum DownA Contested Con-tested Election Cose Legislative Executive and Judicial Appropri ation Bills Washington Feb 17After a fovr hours debate in the senate today t conference report on the bill to amend the immigration laws was agreed toby I to-by a vote of 34 to 31 As the report had already been agreed to In the house the bill as modified in conference confer-ence now goes to the president It adds to the classes of excluded aliens all persons over 16 years of age who cannot read the English language or seme other language except that admissible ad-missible immigrants may bring wait them or send for illiterate parents o I grandparents over 50 years of age wives and minor children I also prohibits hibits from employment on public works aliens who come regularly or habitually into the United States fm the purpose of engaging in any mechanical me-chanical trade or manual labor and who have not made declaration of intention tention to become American citizens The secretary of the treasury however how-ever may permit the entrance of aliens lilt the purpose of teaching new arts > r industries and the act is not to apply to persons coming here from Cuba during dur-ing the continuance of the present disorders dis-orders there Four Democratic senators sena-tors Chilton Faulkner Hill and Martin Mar-tin voted for the report and four Republicans Re-publicans Hansbrough Hawley Mantle Man-tle and Shoup against it After the immigration bill was disposed dis-posed of the senate proceeded to the consideration of executive business and at 6 p m adjourned |
