Show 8 YOUNG UTAH RETORTS To the Editor of The Herald I Sirne week ago today there appeared ap-peared In your columns a formal protest I I pro-test signed by a portion of Young I Utah against the Sal Lake Tribunes assumption of dictatorshIp The causes I leading up to the grievances were enumerated enu-merated and specific charges entered against the managqment of that paper I for itmj persistent abuse of that class I whom without authority i has clamed to represent The following day the Tribune devoted de-voted nearly two columns in a long drwnout sneer at what It designates as a screed As no honest attempt I was mace to rebut our chares or answer i an-swer OU questions we renewed them being emphatic still more specific and still more emphatc We are now favored with a second edition The frt answer appeared under un-der the heading of A Late SprIng Snow and the one now before us Is called Blnldng In the Bawn Doubtless Doubt-less the famous on TraIn Story will come next because where there Is such a manifest determination to be consistent con-sistent In the appropriate selection of title with reference to the mater under un-der discussion we can easily anticipate One of the biographers of Lord Byron By-ron in summing up the poets charac tel said He was a man with one I virtue linked to a thousand crimes We ura reminded of this remark In replying re-plying to the Tribune for It also appears ap-pears to have one virtue The shrewdness exhibited by it in affecting Innocence and refusing to recognize much less discuss any mater which selfinteret or policy demands shall be concealed Is truly wonderful and as we are disposed to give even thewel anybody their due we make a note of their unquestionable skill In this direction di-rection I the art of dissembling can be counted as a vlrtueand by com parisn we think It should be In thIs instancethen they stand unexcelled Still i Is very annoying to us but as we now serve notice on the TrIbune management that Young Utah intends in-tends to be lS persistent In repudiating thei authority to speal for them as the Tribune has heretofore been per slstmt in assuming that rIght this ought to malte them shrewder Ve do not wish to be understood In making this comparison that we Intend to be unreasonable but we do want I under stood that In this mater we are in earnest earest The situatIon restated Is this About six 01 seven months ago the T bune managers had an attack of Young Utah 1Iea9Iesl although the eruption was plainlt vlslble erupton plainly every morning I was considered 1 mid affair af-fair at that tmeand no alarm was entertained But trough sothe un known cause about tile time the pI st r k4 11f l < Utcal part s er holding their con yentons the Tribune ediors took a chi and the dises struck in From that moment the most hop ful wishes of an anxious and longsuffering public were of no avail It became a desperate case and by the time the results of the election were known the paUenl became delirious These deliriums 50methnes very distressing and at other tmes less violenttook the for of extreme ex-treme anxiety for the welfare of Young Utah The patients Imagined or at all events stated that thq whole of the United States were watching watc Ing with suspicious ee the movements of the few young men in thIs state and that business in the east was practically at a standstill in the meantime mean-time In the exuberance of their zeal for the moral political social and religious re-ligious welfare of these young men who by some mysterious process had become the especial charge and concern Qf the Trbunethey have alternated between advice persuasIon intimidation intimida-tion and lastly abuse to bring them to the Tribunes ideal of American citizens Here we reach onq of the main points In dispute for Yqung Utah claim to be free fulfedged American citizens In all that this Implies and we indignantly indig-nantly resent the Insinuation that we arc 10t Suppose we should admit for one moment the Tribune statement which we do not as true yiz that onehalf of one per cent of the people In the state were guilty of the offenses charge by them would this justify them In slandering this entire people as pledgebreakers arid advertising to the word that young Utah are slaves to the priesthood etc7 The very frst reply from the Tribune to our protest brands ever one of the 20 who signed It as so many serfs and this unreasonable hate and unrighteous abuse has reached those excessive limIts lm Its where patience and submission cease to be virtues and we wan the organ of the RisIng Storm of the reaction re-action that is pending Ve again repeat our determination of refusing to discuss those matter which do not concern us and all the wily efforts of the Tribune editor to drag us onto untenable ground will fail The sensational charges against the domlnent church whether true or false will have to be settled if settled at all by those whom the church shall see fit to appoint They have not appointed ap-pointed us Ve have no authority no time and no desire to meddle with maters outside our legitimate sphere but on the broad and sold foundation of Young Utah we stand without seeking advice or asking consent of anybody In the name of Young Utah we demand a cessation of those cesaton slanders that have been heaped upon us Ve are prepared to prove that the Tribune has scoffed at our manhood libeled our character denied our loyalty loyal-ty to our country Is injuring our prospects pects by its Insane hatred of those whom it cannot coerce and while pursuing pur-suing this course has the supreme audacity au-dacity to pose before the world as the organ of Young Utah As AmerIcan citizens first and as Young Utah second we have a right to protest against thee methods and the cowardly subterfuge of pointing to some other person or perspns as the author of our woes will not blind our eyes to the real culprit Whoa the Tribune w1 explain who appointed them the exclusive judges a to what constitutes an American citizen citi-zen when they will inform us by what authority they assume to be the organ of Young Utah and when they cease to commit offenses against Young Utah that we charge then and not until then will we rest Respectful I ly YOUNG UTAKS |
