Palace Track Paring Races and Are Given A Ovation By the Big Crowd East PIve Mile Race Which Turville Wills Other Races Lively i Matt Collinson clipped a second off the state halfmile record at the Palace Pal-ace track last evening He made the distance in 52 seconds which is just one second better than the record made by George Weiler ten days ago The meet was likewise notable for a i brief visit from the officers of the Colorado Colo-rado volunteers Unfortunately someone some-one blundered and the soldiers were brought into the most crowded section of the stand where they could only find standing room But during their ailtaoshort stay they were frantically cheered by the crowd and the band played the Star Spangled Banner for them as they filed out through the shouting throngs The races were up to the average and there were many pretty finishes W G Furman made his debut and got third places in the fivemile open the only professional event on the card I He appears to be a strong rider and oUSt to make both Turville and Chapman Chap-man hustle when he learns to negotiate negoti-ate the steep curves of the Palace track In the halfmile amateur handicap the scratch men were too heavily handicapped and were frozen out in the preliminary heats Nat Evans was on scratch in the first heat but S 11 Woolley 45 yards had too long a handicap and he passed Earl Clayton GO yards and with A W Smith 40 yards and J E Barker 35 yards trailing him he ran away leaving Horace Hor-ace Tucker 23 yards and Evans farm the rear Woo lley Won without hal trying I try-ing Baker beating out Smith for second sec-ond place at the tape Earl Clayton I was fourth Time 10315 Becks Tutile Ride Lawrence Beck was put on scratch in the second heat on the strength of his pretty ride Friday night in the threequartermile handicap He did business from the start passing A W Beam 20 Beards and A E Anakin 25 yeards in a manner that made the crowd cheer him lustily He had caught the long mark men J W Guth rle 35 yards C L Croon 50 yards and J Munson 65 yardfi on the second sec-ond lap but his hard ride had taken all the spirt out of him and Munson finished fin-ished first with Anakin who had sneaked in on the pole second and Crowton third Beck got fourth place Time 105 With nobody on the scratch it looked easy for Woolley in the final He and A W Smith ran quickly away from the other and then Smith tickled hundreds hun-dreds of friends who have watched his practice work by literally loping away from Woolley and winning by many lengths Baker wa third and Anakln fourth Time 10335 Clay ton fell on the second lap but was not injured Mile qualifying heats were run in the fivemile open professional Turville won the first without exerting himself much although he had a momentary brush with Furman who came in a strong second passing Tod Caine on the turn into the stretch Caine was third Time 223 2S OE Edmonds made the second heat speedy by starling his usual frisky spurt at the start Then he lay back nailed himself to Chapmans rear tire and hung on for dear life Chapman won after a sharp little tussel with Chaffee who was a good second with Edmonds In third place half a wheel back Time 21425 Final Was a Warm Race The final was a bruising race right from the crack of the gun Turville Chapman Furman Chaffee and Edmonds Ed-monds were the starters Emery paced the first mile and he made it a an 1 one Then Jensen picked up the five i very neatly and carried them another mile Tod Caine gave the riders a hot I pace on the next mile and all of them were riding nose down and attending I strictly to business Emery made a poor pickup on the next mile but he gave them a fast pace Then Jensen essayed to come n again but he was too slow in getting his high gear going i and the riders rolled on past him That last mile was one long breath less lungbursting sjpnnt Chapman and Turville were up In front bowling along neck and neck Right after them I were Furman and Edmunds and Chaf fee Faster and faster tho Dace grew as they whirled around lap after lap and I tne crowd rose as one man when the bell lap came and Turvllf and Chap man were still burning along with neither one a fraction to the good There was a wild prolonged howl from the crowd when they came tearing around the last turn and by one final effort Turville Jumped his wheel a frao 4 tion to the good and won with Chap Chap man just back Furman a close third and Edmonds a still closer fourth the only local man to get a place The time was 1104 Visit of Soldiers The Colorado soldies created n diversion The Second was so slow that the crowd I jeered the riders Meakin won handily and Lawrence Beck beat out A W Smith for second place Timt 23S 1X The final was a trifle faster and Ed die Smith bear out his old rival Fred Meakin in the nicest kind of style after af-ter a hot sprint of two laps in all of whIch Smith had decide J3 the better of i Baker got thirdplacb and Beck fourth Time 21C 33 Collinson made a pretty half mile ride behind Turville and Furman on n tandem He clung to the tande pace better than any rider that has before appeared on the track He made the quarter In 2 15 and the
