Show cUlloYs O S A D MtXICM S FIT BLOODY ENCOUNTER AT SHALL TOWN NEAR BISBEE ARIZ One American and One Mexican Dead and Several Wounded jif ore Trou bio I Feared blo Denver Colo Sept 11A special l to 1 the News from BisbeeAriz says Late Saturday afternoon there occurred at I Naco a small town on the International Internation-al line nine miles from here a shooting shoot-Ing affair which has already caused the I death of one American cowboy and a Mexican guard and the wounding of I several others and ultimately in delivering I de-livering over to the Mexican authorities authori-ties four American citizens who will be tried for murder murer Several weeks ago James Herron was arrested by Mexican line riders charged charg-ed with smuggling horses and was being be-ing taken by guards to Nogales for a hearing While at Naco Bob Clayton a friend of Herron asked permission to accompany him to Nogales The Mexican officers consented but at the i same time notified Clayton that he would have to disarm himself giving him thirty minutes to do so When the I time was up the guards started toward Clayton who pulled his gun and commenced com-menced shooting at the same time backing toward this side of the line The guards seven in number returned ed the fire while two other cowboys one Qf whom was named Franco came to Claytons rescue who escaped to this side but not without receiving a bullet through his body from the effects of which he died here last night Captain Molina of the Mexican guards was shot twice once through the right thigh and through the arm neither of which is serious Franco was arrested by the guards and placed in jail while the other cowboy escaped An hour and a half later three guards who started with Herron to Nogales were overtaken by a party of four I American cowboys friends of Herron who were bent upon rescuing him A lively fight took place resulting in the killing of a guard named Pedrogan and I the wounding of Manuel Rivona so severely se-verely that death is expected hourly The third guard escaped to the customhouse I custom-house and securing help returned and drove the cowboys across to this side I of the line Herron refused to come back with his rescuers but continued on to Nogales No-gales where he gave himself up He chooses to face the charge of smuggling smug-gling rather than risk being taken by officers here who hold a warrant for him he having escaped from the Oklahoma Ok-lahoma penitentiary after being > sentenced sen-tenced for twentyfive yearn for mur Gt Late Saturday night another cowboy named Lee Ramsey who conducts a saloon on the Mexican side of the line wivs arrested by those authorities charged with being implicated in the affair and is now in jail at Naco with I trance The cowboys since the fight have been gathering horses and their friends and are heavily arming themselves I preparatory it is said to a attempt to rescue Ramsey and Franco There are now In this city and at points near here and Naco over fifty of them armed with Winchesters and sixshooters The Mexican guards at Naco have been reinforced re-inforced by the addition at a body of twentyfive Cordados under Lieutenant Colonel Kosterlitzky and they now have an armed force of nearly a hundred I hun-dred men guarding the line and jail I in which the Americans are confined i Should the attempt at rescue be made I a most serious battle will result as both parties are worked up to fever heat over the killings The four cowboys who attacked the guards In Sonora are well known In this city and are here tonight not having hav-ing been placed under arrest Their movements are being watched and they will not be allowed to leave the country Mexican Consul Gavito is arranging ar-ranging matters a once to have the authorities here arrest and hold tem be ar until the proper papers can xaed for |
