Show LAID TO BEST Funeral Scrrices Over the Itemains of Senator Stanford I I The Services Were Very Simple the Address Ad-dress by Dr Stabbing Interment iu the Family Mausoleum MENLO PARK Cal June 24 The funeral fun-eral services over the remains of Senator Leland Stanford were held today on the gruunds of Stanford university at Palo Alto and the remains were placed in the family mausoleum Special trains from San Francisco arrived here this morning carrying a great number of people The most intimate friends of the late senator were driven to the university which is several miles from Menlo Park Others were taken by train to Palo Alto station which is near the college ground It was 1 oclock when the funeral procession pro-cession left the Stanford mansion for the large quadrangle at the university The employes of the ranch numbering 150 men acted as an escort They were followed fol-lowed by the clergy and pall bearers in carriages The honorary pallbearers as designated by Mrs Stanford were Colonel C F Crocker Stephen T Gage N T Smith W W Stow exSenator Charles N Fel ton A N Towne President David Starr Jordan of the Stanford university Lloyd Tevis W W Montague Henry L Dodge Charles H Cummings Justice McFarland Judge McKenna Judge F I E Spencer of San Jose F F Lieb of San Jose A L Tubbs Dr Breyfogle of San Jose and Dr W H Harkness I The pallbearers proper were eight of the engineers who had been longest in the service of the Southern Pacific They were selected by Superintendent Fillmore in accordance with an expressed wish of the senator Their names are as follows Sands Clark Con W Collins Barney Kelly J G Restfgne J E Saulpaugh William Scott George Collins and W M I Lacey Then came the hearse and line of carriages car-riages in which were members of the family and intimate friends of the deceased de-ceased As the procession approached the entrance to the quadrangle the crowd assembled at the gates gave way and then followed the procession to a platform plat-form which had been erected The plat formwas beautifully decorated with vines and flowers Floral tributes from friends were numerous and some designs very elaborate The services were simple Bishop Nichols Nich-ols read the burial service of the Episcopal Episco-pal church and tho choir of Grace church San Francisco sang several hymns Rev Dr Stebbins pastor of the First Unite nan church of Han irancisco delivered an address reviewing the life and works of the senator At the conclusion of the address the cortege proceeded to the mausoleum Down the wide road and through shady roads the procession passed until the final resting place of the dead was reached The casket was enclosed in a steel covering cover-ing and then lowered into the sarcophagus sarcopha-gus |
