Show NINE PER ON DROWNED Sad Accident to a Pleasure Party on Lake George I A EXCURSION BOAT SUNK Carelessness on the Part of the Pilot the Cause The Boat Sank So Quickly That No Time Was Given tho III Fated Pleasure Pleas-ure Seekers to Utter a Prayer LAKE GEORGE N Y Aug 4The steam yacht Rachael sunk last night with twentynine u passengers board Such was the startling news that went ringing through Lake George early this morning and to it was added information that nine had been drowned and twenty saved The steamer was chartered by a party from the Fourteenth Mile Island hotel to convey them to tho One Hundredth Mile Island house where a dance was in progress pro-gress The regular pilot was ill and the substitute was not an experienced pilot although familiar with that part of the lake where he had been employed two seasons The night was very darK and piloting was unsafe except when aided by the trained eye of well informed boatmen The steamer got too far off the channel when going past the old piers and stove a large hole in the bottom of the boat which sank quickly The ladies on board were laughing and singing and instantaneously instan-taneously the scene changed as the boat sank so rapidly that no time was given the nraver illfated pleasure seekers to utter a Some of the passengers were caught under the shade deck and died quickly It seemed hours before help arrived though a dozen men were on the water in rowboats almost before the smokestack of the Eachael sank from sight The names of the drowned are as follows Miss OVITT Miss BURKE MIss HAL Miss WORDEN MRS MITCHELL and son and an unknown un-known lady All the above named were from Troy Brooklyn and Hoboken I is said the party was composed mostly of New York and Brooklyn excursionists A Bark Goes Ashore PORT TOWNSEND Wash Aug 4 The Chilian bark Eutrea in ballast from Valparaiso to Moodyville went ashore this morning Dungeness point during o thick fog at low water A fresh westerly west-erly wind prevailed and the vessel was driven hard ashore and will probably be a total loss The captain being a stranger to these waters lost his bearings The crew reached shore safely A 850000 Fire ST PAUL Aug 4A special from Princeton Minn says a fire at that place early this morning destroyed the First National bank building one hotel and six houses causing a loss of f50000 Insured In-sured partially |
