Show The City Council The city council met in the city hall last evening at the usual hour with Mayor Turner in the chair All members were I present The minutes of the previous meeting p meet-ing were read and approved The following petitions were read and acted upon G W Mitchel an aged cripple asked to be granted a free license to run a lemonade stand M S Browning asked that the street railway track on Grant avenue between Twentieth and Twentyfirst be removed H A Mann C E Miller and others asked for a franchise to build an American District telegraph system through the streets and alleys of Ogden city Thomas D Dee asked for damages for a broken glass in one of his buildings caused by the carelessness of the sewer contractors contrac-tors torsJ J J Sullivan presented a lengthy petition peti-tion asking that immediate steps be taken for the opening of Thirtieth street Referred Re-ferred It seems that condemnation proceedings are pending in the First district court on the opening of Thirtieth street and the p 4 result of these proceedings will settle the whole matter The estimated cost of opening the street is 850000but this expense ex-pense will largely be borne by the abutting property owners hence the expense to the city will be very smalL The court proceedings pro-ceedings should be pushed as rapidly as possible as the opening of Thirtieth street is a most important matter The report of the committee on streets was adopted The pay roll of the police department of 507203 for the past two weeks was ordered paid as was the street supervisors payroll pay-roll of 237 The pay roll of the superintendent of public grounds of 5375 L W Tuckers bill of 815318 for prisoners and other bills were ordered paid The miscellaneous bills were referred to the committee on claims On motion of Cannon twenty men were ordered employed in digging the drain leading lead-ing out of the old city cemetery The bill of Sidewalk Assessor Casln of 541531 was referred to the committee on claims This is a claim from January 1890 which is still unsettled The Ogden City Railway company asked for an amended charter or franchise extending ex-tending the number of streets on which it can operate car lines and also asking the privilege of using electricity as a motive mo-tive power It will be remembered that some time ago the council passed an amended ordinance in favor of of H M Beardslev the purchaser of the franchise and property of the old railway company Since then H M Beardsley has trnsferred his purchase to the new company com-pany and this new company refused to accept the first amendment to the charter of 1853 which amendment was passed about a month ago hence the new company asked to have a new amendment to the franchise passed doing away with the objectionable features of the first amendment The ordinance was then read twice and the third reading was postponed until Wednesday evening April 15 The water petition is also to come up Wednesday Wednes-day evening The ordinance changing the license for plumbers from 100 to 25 per year was referred re-ferred to the committee on laws for modification modi-fication Tho ordinance nullifying the ordinance authorizing the issuance of 50000 was referred 1 re-ferred to committee on laws f The Ogden Typographical union by Charles Abernathy president petitioned the council for the use of Lester park pa vilion on May 20 for dancing purposes Referred Re-ferred C D Tyree and others petitioned the council to place an electric light at the intersection in-tersection of Twentyfirst street and Grant venue Referred REPORTS John W Metcalf city marshal reported tho following number of arrests and convictions con-victions for the two weeks ending April 12 1691 Number of arrests 73 number of convictions 63 number discharged 10 The committee on streets reported that the 1 petition of F JKiesel 4k Co asking that the sidewalk on Wall avenue between I Twentyfourth and Twentyfifth streets be put in good repair had been investigated investi-gated and that they had conferred with Superintendent Knapp of Union depot grounds and arranged with him for the grading by the city the railroad company to pay half tho expenses and to put in the asphaltum walks The committee recommended recom-mended that the work be dono as soon as possible The committee recommended that the petition of W B Wedell asking that Fourth street be made one rod narrower e nar-rower be not granted Tho same committee commit-tee recommended that tho petition of N Poulter ot aL for the improvement of the bill on Second street be rejected It was recommended that the Lynne Irrigation Irri-gation company be granted the privilege of repairing the flumes on Washington avenue ave-nue between Fourth and Fifth streets under supervision of the street supervisor The committee reported in favor of granting E R Cropsey tho privilege of erecting an irrigating ditch on First street Allison introduced an ordinance which was referred to the committee on laws fixIng fix-Ing the salaries of justices of the peace after which tile council adjourned until Wednesday evening at 730 |
