Show OUR COLLEGE CADETS The University Company Now Numbers Fiftyseven THE PROSPECTS VERY BRIGHT Military Instructor Wright Is Sanguine Oyer the Outlook for the Military Course In the University Lieutenant Wright the new military instructor in-structor of the Dosoret University has moved from the post to the city and is now ensconced on First street in tho former residence of Mrs C C Young He expects to remain in town with his family for the three years for which he has been detailed A reporter of THE HERALD yesterday I found Lieutenant Wright feeling very well satisfied with his change to citizens life and very sanguine over the prospects of his class at the university Already it numbered num-bered fiftyseven and by fall he expected t have a company of seventyfive well drilled young students Should the university uni-versity make the military course compulsory compul-sory there would be a troop of 175 Lieutenant Wright is entitled to a good deal of credit for having a military instructor instruc-tor appointed to the university here and he has fairly earned the distinction the appointment ap-pointment confers upon him Until recently re-cently the law provided that not more than fifty officers of the army should be detailed as military instructors in the various universities uni-versities and large schools of the country having an enrollment of more than 150 students Fortynine of these positions were filled and Lieutenant Wright sought to have the fiftieth assigned to Utah a territory however has no influence where a state competes with it for any such favors and when the state of Washington made a request for the fiftieth place she got it without difficulty However this was met by the law increasing the number of military college col-lege instructors to seventyfive instead of fifty Lieutenant Wright being instrumental instrumen-tal in working with Congressmen to get the law passed One of the now twentyfive waa therefore given to tho Deseret university univer-sity and Lieutenant Wright was given the postunaer H unaer tne regulations tao instructor has his home in the city but ho and the students stu-dents he is training are subject to the annual an-nual inspection bestowed on all posts the government furnishes rifles belts bayonets bayo-nets cartridges etc for the the use of the drill and the students are only required to provide their own uniforms which cost about 21 each The drills are held on the University square and the lectures delivered deliv-ered by Lieutenant Wright form a part of the regular university course At the annual an-nual examinations the three cadets who stand highest have their names forwarded for honorable mention in the Army and Naqy Rcoigtcr |
