Show IXVrSTIGATK BY ALL MEXNS There is not the slightest objection to an investigation of the manner in which the University lands have been disposed of Every public officials acts ought to be opan to inspection If they cannot bear thought it is because there is something some-thing crooked about them We do not believe that either the Commissioners or the University authorities or anybody Associated with the transactions which certain parties are trying to make political po-litical capital out of will offer the slightest slight-est objection to a thorough Investigation of what they have done There is a wrong way however to do a right thing as we believe the Liberal organ which has become very spiteful about this matter will have to admit or make another meal of its own words And we do not know what authority au-thority the Governor this territory has to appoint a committee of investigation into the acts of the Commissioners as it advocates nor what such a committee could do if they disapproved of the sales that bave been made It is not a good thing to start wrong and make a mess of a matter of importance like this i Tha whole thing can be investigated I investi-gated officially and in a definite manner If the parties who havea personal grievance and interest in the caseare not financiajly able to contest con-test the sale in the courts let those I benevolent people who are agitating the msitec come to their help and see that j a J j > i Q 0 G o A S I they obtain justice This would be a competent investigation and would mean something when a decision was reached And beforo any practical remedy can be had the courts will havoto decide in case of a contest If a committee of some kind is desired to look into and collect the facts there is no need to wait for the Governor to move in the affair and it is doubtful if he would assume to make an appointment for which he has no authority There is nothing in the way of an informal committee if that is wantedand that is really what is asked for but onesided statements of rejected applicants are not sufficient grounds for assault on the Commissioners Com-missioners who have no personal object in defrauding any land owner or prostituting prosti-tuting the powers vested in them by law Thera has been no University lands steal as stated by the Liberal organ The lands have been bought not stolen and the price appears to be satisfactory to those most concerned If the lands sold belong to spmebody else there is a remedy in law forthe wrong and only in law can that remedy be effectually obtained ob-tained no matter how many committees may investigate But let on the light and bring all the facts into full and complete com-plete observation |
