Show CHICAGO UNEMPLOYED A Mass Meeting Held Which i Became Turbulent I ITALIANS START A RIOT The Authorities Order the Gatling Guns Brought Out The Police Finally Charge the Mob and in an Incredibly Short Time It Broke and Ran in Every Direction CHICAGO Aug 30An enormous crowd of unemployed men and women collected on the lake front to hold a mass meeting I was so very much larger than expected that 500 policemen were placed on duty there and I thousand additional ad-ditional summoned from the outlying stations The authorities apprehensive of an outbreak were taking every precaution pre-caution Aa the morning wore on tho crowds constantly increased and became more turbulent Impromptu speeches were made at various points and indications of rioting manifested themselves Finally the crowd surged across Michigan avenue blocking the streets abutting on it and preventing entrance to the Auditorium Audi-torium and other hotels About this time the police began to appear in the crowd In the meantime 500 Italians and others started for Spizzaria market on State street where were stored fifty rifles used by Italian socieii es in parades Arrived Ar-rived there the mob demanded the guns Spizzari refused to give them up and pushed the invaders out and locked the doors He then gave them 2 with which they bought Italian and American flags and returned to the lake front a squad of police keeping their eyes on them but I making no arrests The return of the I Italians increased the excitement and soon the mob began throwing stones at the police followed by a shower of cbuplmg pins picked up on the Illinois Central railroad tracks Orders were at once sent to havo galling guns in readiness and the Dolce were ordered to charge Their clubs at once began to beat a lively tune on the heads of the mob and in an incredibly short time it broke and ran in every direction quickly melting into individuals fleeing through the streets and alleys and the trouble was over at least for the time tme Shortly after 5 oclock this afternoon everything being quiet and all the crowds dispersed the reserve police forces were sent home At the armory of the Second infantry on the lake front there was much earnest work this evening an ux tra guard being placed on duly with a line of pickets outside The same conditions con-ditions prevail at the west side armory of the Second and armory of the First reg iments all being prepared for any possible pos-sible attempt to sack the armories Mayor May-or Harrison said tonight that he would not allow any more incendiary speeches made on the lake front |
