Show THE LTJMBEE YARD FIRE A Loss of 35000 with 12000 Insurance In-surance The Blaze Was Not Completely Eitln eulsjioil Until Yesterday Noon The Origin a Mystery The fire which was raging at Morrison Merrill Gos lumber yard when THE HERALD went to press yesterday morning morn-ing was not entirely extinguished until noon How or where the blaze started 13 still an unsolved problem Some say that the first fire was seen in the barn on the west of the office building and that from this place it spread over the whole yard while others claim that the fire did not begin in any one place but seemed to come from a dozen different places in th yard The alarm was rung in by George Bennett foreman of the yard who was awakened by the terrific roaring of the flames and leaned from his bed to see two piles of lumber twenty feet high enveloped by the tongues of firo which leaped and curled at least twenty feet in the air In an instant the surprised man had rushed down the stairs rung In an alarm and had rushed back for his clothes When he came out from the office the whole yard was one mass of seething flames and soon the fire was lighting up the whole western part of the cityThe The west side department arrived on the scene in quick time and shortly afterwards after-wards a portion of the main department came down In the meantime hundreds of persons of all ages and in many conditions con-ditions of deshabille were rushing from various parts of the city until a great crowd had congregated at a respectable and comfortable distance from the flames and watched with awe the mighty devastation devas-tation that was going on At first it ap peered as though the fire could not be confined within the precincts of the yard but would devour all the residences resi-dences ia the vicinity and household house-hold furniture and goods were being removed from all the houses nearby near-by The fire laddies did nobly and worked faithfully until noon yesterday It is believed that the fire was of incendiary incen-diary origin but no clue that will lead to a discovery of the truth has yet been found The loss will amount to at least 35000 S the insurance to only 12000 placed in the following companies The Royal Exchange H P Windsor Co agents fl500 Peoples Insurance company Sprague Sharp agents 2500 Underwriter Insurance company Moore Thomas agents 2000 Glenn Palls company Charles Link agent 52000 Atlas and National Conway Donnellan agents 1500 and Saginaw f2500 |
