Show i A Poor Rich Young Man I was chatting the other day with a rich II young incomememberof the jennesse doree By c income I mean one of those favored scions of wealthy parentage who inherits a sufficient income to never compelled to bother about earning his own living Until within a few years there were comparatively few of this I class in this country though there is a community of such in all the European cities My young friend who isa pink I of fashion slid quite a well educated and agreeable fellow was lamenting the fact that he could not possibly make both ends meet at tho end of the year on his income of fifteen thousand I expatiated on the fact that many men I had married and maintained families snugly on less per annum than 15000 that the amount represented 5 per cent on a small fortune and that he must simply be recklessly extravagant who not only couldnot live well on it but ran in debt He answered me that his bachelor chambers were quite modest and his club bills very moderate that being absent so much visiting his friends he did not keep either a valet or an equipage He admitted that his clothing and personal per-sonal outfit cost himmore than hislodg ing or his club I wondered how he managed then to spend his income so j that he was always in debt at the end of 1 the year He thenexplained that while i he spent so much of his time visiting his I fashionable friends in their country homes or on their yachts the outlay in tips for the servants and presents to his entertainers was far greater than living at home and his club would cost him When he added that his wedding presents alone the past year had cost him 6uOO I could appreciate the force of his statement Just think of it how many families could be happy and wealthy on 515000 per annum Yet this scion of wealth is in a continual struggle with debt which is far more wearing and disagreeable dis-agreeable any day than the struggle of honest toil for daily breadOnce a Week |
