Show DEADLY HOSTILITY TO S ILTEU Alleged Republican papers keep pecking peck-ing away at the Presidents message as prcof of his I bitter hostility to silver and some of them find fault with THE HERALD for disputing their private interpretations in-terpretations But they do not make a solitary quotation from the message in proof of what they assert If the message mes-sage denounces silver and shows that the President wants to utterly destroy the white metal it will be easy to cite the particular parts ol it in which this hostility hos-tility appears THE HERALD does not agree with some of tha arguments used in the message and has freely criticized them But it has failed to find in it that deadly hostility which pretended Republicans declare it expresses If it is there draw it out and hold it up so that we can see it The message has been summarized as follows Its principal statements were That the SHERMAN silver purchasing act is largely to blame for the existing business depression That the United Statas cannot longer maintain the parity of gold and silver with the present purchases of silver indefinitely in-definitely continued That the wage earners are most affected and therefore most interested in the repeal re-peal of bad and passage of sound financial laws That Congress on which he places the responsibility should act at once That the revision ot the tariff though pledged the party must wait until the financial question issettled In conclusion the President recommends recom-mends theprompt repeal of the SHERMAN lawWe We are not attempting to uphold the Presidents views on these points We simply wish to show in brief what his I message contains in order to combat the error that it is utterly and uncompromisingly uncompro-misingly opposed to silver Many strong bimetallists agree with him that the first and most important duty to clear away the underbrush of the purchasing clause I and that the question of the coinage of the two metals can come after the way being thus mada clear for its settlement We have not shared in that opinion We believe that it is for the interest of the silver cause to hold on to the existing law poor makeshift as jt is as a hostage till something better ia secured But that does not imply that those who take a different view are uncompromising enemies ene-mies of silver And how can those papers that make out of the message deadly hostility to silver harmonize their notion with the Presidents declared desire to maintain a parity between gold and silver and his explanation that one of the chief reasons for stopping the silver purchases by the government is its disturbance of that parity par-ity The fact is they manufacture for partisan purposes the enmity they fiil to find and thus show their own hostility to the truth I |
