Show One of Uoucjs Setbacks In a dramatic agency recently says a writer for the Philadelphia Slageland I foiled a manager friend of mine looking over some of Dion Boucicaults plays which thought of renting from Louise ThorndykeBoucicault i Did you ever hear of one of Boucicaults plays called Rescued1 asked my friend No Well it was produced at Booths theatre late in the seventies and the old man tfc Tight it was the best piece he had ever written He spent more time in writing it and more money in staging it than any other he ever bad anything to do with except perhaps the spectacular production produc-tion of Babel and Bijou in London He engaged Booths theatre renting rent-ing it outright spent a great deal I of money in redecorating the interior r enlarging the balcony for the crowds he was sure would throng the house and engaged an expensive company for the play He Blade Clara Morris an offer of 500 a week which she refused Rose Coghlan was the leading lady and Marie Prescott and Ada Gilman were brought all the way from San Francisco to take part in the performance Among the C other Tlayer engaged were George Clark Dominick Murray and George F de Vere and Henry Herbertboth of whom are now with Crane The play was a failure and Boucicault lost all the money he invested in-vested in it Afterward he produced Louis XI playingLouis himself while his son Don made hia first appearance on the stageas the daaphin This production pro-duction was also a failure Tho financial losses taken in connection with the disappointment dis-appointment attendant on the miscarriage miscar-riage of longcherished plans had a serious se-rious effect on Boucicauits hbalth and he became desperately ill When he regained re-gained his health be returned toEngland ter uaded to do so by his children and effected his reappearance at the AdolphI theatre in London |
