| Show Cheap Money The rag money heresy has done much to complicate financlalideas in this country Although there is no connection connec-tion between that and the movement for the free coinage of silver yet they are associated as-sociated in some peoples minds and are looked upon as equally fallacious This notion is assisted by the fact that some of the former greenbackers are now advocates ad-vocates unlimitedsilver coinige They damage the cause by reason of their former error The terms I cheap money and honest hon-est money originated in the campaign against rag money They are improperly im-properly applied in the present discussion on the coinage question It is not proposed pro-posed to make money by simply giving to something the government stamp It is I proposed to coin money out of a precious metal which has been a precious metal a money metal ever since money has been in use Silver coins are not fiat money anymore any-more than gold coins are It is true that silver as a commodity has gone down in price for reasons that are obvious or rather that gold has gone up which re ally constitutes the difference But the history of the world shows that when both metals have been used as money the ratio between them has kept practically the same and therefore it is evident as the comparative market value of the metals has materially changed since silver was demonetized that the cause is due to that foolish piece of Republican legislation legisla-tion Let silver be restored to its proper place as moneyat a changed ratio with gold if i necessary to suit the times and the invincible in-vincible opposition of so many influential influen-tial menand the truth that one metal has as much claim to the title of honest money as the other will soon be established estab-lished The value of the white metal asa as-a commodity will also bo appreciated The prejudice that bas been worked up and fostered against it by speculators will disappear All talk of it as a cheap money or fiat money will be hushed And the benefits to the country from the increase of real money in circulation will be so great that silver will be in every sense as precious as gold according to the natural and intrinsic relations of the two metals from time inmemmorial |
