Show THE POLICE COURT 1 1 umber ol Important Cases Before Judge Gee William Blake Enticed Into a Poker Game and Fleeced Henry Ellsworth Held A Forgery Case Justice Gee had a busy day yesterday and several important cases were disposed dis-posed of Henry K James and 0 H Marshall were charged on the complaint of William Will-iam Blake with gambling The parties charged run a barber shop on Second South street The complainant alleged that in the rear of the shop he was enticed en-ticed into a poker game and fleeced to the tune of 200 He said he was drunk at the time and didnt know much of what went on except that he bought chips to the amount of about S200 and when the game was over he had neither money or chips There were others in the game besides the defendants but he could not remember who they were Attorney John B Anderson An-derson appeared for the defendant James and N W Sonnedecker represented Marshall After a long and tedious trial his honor imposed a fine of 50 each on the accused Notice of appeal was given and the bond fixed at 200 Henry Ellsworth the young fellow who was lately employed as a collector orKopps Candy company appeared to answer the charge of embezzling 5750 money belonging to his employer which he had collected and failed to account for The defense attempted to prove that the defendant had been robbed but it appeared ap-peared more probable that he had lost the money in gambling He was held to await the action of the grand jury in bonds of 400 William Pierce who was indicted for the petit larceny of a pair of pants from a Dago was discharged Thomas Gleason was fined 15 for using vile and abusive language to Mrs Stone Charles Martin who has been several times remanded was again arraigned on tho charge of uttering and passing a forged check in the sum of 1605 at Jim Williams saloon The check purported to be signed by C W Aldrich but it was a forgery Several other checks for different ferent amounts were found on the pris oner when he was first arrested all bearing bear-ing the signature C W Aldrich and all declared spurious The prisoner was held to the grand jury in 5250 bonds Eva Weston pleaded guilty to the charge of baing drunk and fighting and was assessed 10 Jennie R Luxon of 222 Third South street was fined for disturbing the peace It appears that she got too much to drink and made it lively for the whole neigh borhood during yesterday afternoon from 2 till 5 oclock Ed Smith charged with gambling was I dismissed It was supposed he was an accomplice with James and Marshall but it b appeared he had nothing to do with their operations Charles Coldwater was discharged on the charge of assault and battery George Smith and William Ball the two respectable appearing workmen who were run in for stealing a ride from Provo to this city were discharged They both swore they paid the brakeman for allowing allow-ing them to ride The brakeman said they did not but the justice believed the defendants and let them go Frank Berry a plain drunk was let off with a caution It was shown that he had a wife and two small children depending de-pending on him for bread and this touched a soft spot in his honor Two youths yesterday were found attempting at-tempting to pawn a gold bracelet beads on a spring and were arrested on suspicion The boys said they found it but their ala was not credited at police headquarters headquart-ers and the bracelet in the hands of the police waiting an owner |
