Show JUDGE KENTUCKY SMITH i I A Short Talk with Utahs New Associate Justice Kentucky Smith President Cleve lands appointee for associate justice of Utah was at the Cullen last evening swapping inside political information with Judge Anderson Judge Smith will be the youngest man on the Utah supreme bench He was born in 1857 and is but thirtysix years of age although he might be easily taken to be a man in the forties He was admitted to the bar before he was 21 at Blandville the county seat of Ballard county Kentucky When he first came westhe located at Boise City Ida and there being another attorney there by the name of Lansing Smith to distinguish him from his namesake he was called Kentucky Smith which stuck to him after he moved to Ogden Mr Smith confessed that his appointment appoint-ment was a surprise to him as it came much sooner than he had reason to expect ex-pect Even now he says he does not know whether he is to succeed Judge Blackburn or not He greatly regretted Delegate Rawlins resignation Richards Rich-ards appointment was very generally endorsed en-dorsed by the people of Ogden especially by the Democrats In case of an election he did not believe that the Democrats would have much opposition op-position as he didnt see how the Republicans Re-publicans could consistently make much of a fight the territory at the regular election having unqualifiedly given its sanction to a Democrat Robert B Smith who was the district attorney at Helena during Clevelands former administration is a brother of Kentucky Smith being three years his senior |
