VALUATION OF SALT LAKE COUNTY Clerk Meloys Letter to Superintendent of Census Porter Robert P Porter superintendent of census recently wrote to County Clerk Meloy asking him to forward an estimate esti-mate of the cash valuation of the real estate es-tate in Salt Lake county and Mr Meloy has answered as follows I Robert P Porter Esq superintendent of i Census Washington D C I DEAR SraThe assessed vnlnation of real estate in Salt Lake county Utah territory ter-ritory Junel 1SOO was about as I have stated viz 41236441 The cash value cannot be estimated at this time 1 the Sherman law is repealed and no sound legislation is accomplished by the extraordinary ex-traordinary session of Congress aeout to convene removing silver from the column col-umn of commodities and restoring to the white metal its ancient character as I money of ultimate redemption my judgment judg-ment is that the true value would bo i about 50 per cent of that amount I had considered it about 5 per cent more Very Respectfully H V MELOY I County Clerk I
