| Show I I COLLIED AT A CRO ING A Train Crashes Into a Street Oar in Chicago I THREE PERSONS KILLED Eight Others Are Wounded Two of Whom Wi Die A Horrible Accident Caused by the Case lesncss of Trainmen Tho Engineer and Firemen Arrested Bodies of the Dead Frightfully Maugled CHICAGO July 17Another horrible disaster attributable to a btreet crossing at Grade by railroads occurred this evening even-ing An incoming passenger train on r the Grand Trunk road crashed into II ja crowded street car at Forty ninth street killing Charles Perkins Per-kins John Dillon and Mrs Maggie Muryhy and wounding eight others of whom two will probably die The Fortyninth street crossing is a network of tracks and always has been regarded asa as-a dangerous spot A long freight train going west had just passed and the tower flagman raised the gates This was taken as a signal that tbe way was clear and I the driver of the car started ahead A passenger train which was rapidly I approaching from the west struck the street car squarely in the middle turning it around and hurlinc it thirty feet from the point where it was struck Some of the passengers managed to save themselves I them-selves by jumping The three people killed were frightfully mangled The police arrested the engineer engin-eer and fireman on the train The engineer en-gineer said hedid not see the street car until it was on the track and so close that it was impossible for him to stop The tower man did not see the passenger train until after the gates were raised and the street car started ahead |
