Show THE UNION DEFOT i PLAN One Way of Raising Funds for the Deep Creek Road THE COMMITTEE MEETING Some Members Inclined to Wait Until a Company Is Ready to Build Rio Grande Western Earnings for March > Worlds Fair Rates Claim Department Depart-ment WorkThe Heavy Medication Medica-tion Traluc Railway Notes The committee appointed to formulate apian for building a railroad to Deep creek will meet this evening at the chamber of commeerce The various members of the committee have been rubbing their foreheads to a fine polish trying to devise some scheme that will commend itself to the solid business busi-ness sense of the bankers merchants etc etcThe The popular enthusiasts who are always al-ways in favor of anything and everything thatis proposed will not worry themselves them-selves on the details of any proposition but will jump in and help out whatever the wise heads agree upon One of the propositions which will be submitted to the committee will be a scheme to con vert Pioneer square into a site for a union denot The plan is to organize a union depot company with 300000 capital stock and the city deed the block to the company To insure the control of the same the city shall retain 151000 of the capital stock or a controling interest This will allow the city council to name trustees or directors and to insure in-sure that the Union Depot company will be at all times operated with a view to the greatest benefit to the greatest number num-ber of citizens It is suggested that the council shall elect as trustees a board including in-cluding representatives of the different banking institutions of the city for example ex-ample J H Walker W S McCornick L S Hills Hsber M Wells James H Bacon L B Karrick J W Donnellan J M Stout and men of their business and financial standing With men of their commercial importance import-ance on the board acting as trustees for the city and citizens It is believed that the Pioneer square property would be conducted in a manner to accrue to the benefit of all The Union Depot company with this valuable property at its disposal could sell 149000 of the shares to raise a fund to secure the Deen creek railway every subscriber to the Deep creek fund to receive re-ceive dollar for dollar in the shares of the Union Depot company As a further inducement the depot company could offer the Deep Creek road terminal facilities on the Union depot grounds free of charge Should the Rio Grande Western Union Pacific or any other road desire to come into the Union depot they could be permitted to do so on the same terms that are exacted for like privileges in other cities By the city holding the control of the Union depot it can be wielded in a very potential way As the city rows in population pop-ulation terminal grounds will become so expensive that a small road running to any of the outlying settlements or mining min-ing camps cannof be undertaken By securing the Pioneer square as a site for a Union passenger depot de-pot the city will be always able to offer depot facilities to any independent line that may be built and as these roads do much good by contributing their trade to the city the importance of preserving the right of terminal facilities cannot be over stated It will also be urged that by the conversion conver-sion of the Pioneer block into Union depot de-pot grounds the city will be always in position to accord to the railroads depot privileges without trespassing on the rights of property owners by granting franchises over residence streets Ic will centralize all the passenger depots under one roof and prove a great convenience to travelers The above was the only thoroughly defined de-fined plan that was heard of on the street The impression is out that if 150000 can be raised the road will be built Some of the members of the committee however how-ever are knownto be opposed to any effort being made to raise any bonus whatever until they receive a request from some responsible company for such local aid These persons hold that until some company is in position to build the road it is useless for the citizens to make any overtures RUN OVER HIS COW Verdict Against tho Rio Grande Western for SCO The first case taken up before Judge Zane yesterday was that of E A Jeffs vs the Rio Grande Western Railway company com-pany an appeal from Commissioner Pratt The plaintiff alleged that on I Sep 19 1891 he was possessed of a milk cow of the value of S75 and while being driven across defendants track on Sixth West street the said cow was ran over by a train Worlds fair rates Is one of great Interest to the people of Utah just at the present time and many are delaying de-laying their preparations to visit the great show until they can find out how much it is going to cost The railroads have been wrestling with the problem for several months and representatives of all the western roads will meet at Chicago today and again take up the question J H Bennett of the Rio Grande Western will be in attendance A prominent local passenger department depart-ment official expresses the belief that the round trip rate from Utah points will be between 60 and 70 and that the tickets will probobly be limited to thirty days A thirtyday limit would hardly be satisfactory satis-factory to the people of this region as many of them contemplate an extended trip to the far east Rio Grande Western Earnings The Rio Grande Western earnings for the month of March show a decrease of 7200 compared with the corresponding month of last year and the earnings for Department Work The general public has very little knowledge know-ledge of the vast amount of work done by the claim department of a railroad Claim Agent Paul of the Rio Grande Western yesterday showed a HERALD man a report he had just received on a claim for freight charges shipped by a California farmer to Chicago The potatoes pota-toes had been refused at Chicago and sold for the freight charges The amount realized re-alized only came within 131 of the amount of the charges and the railroads came back on the shipper for this amount It took a year to collect the claim and the correspondence accompanying the report re-port weighed about five pounds Railway Notes Unti the 16th inclusive the Union Pacific Pa-cific train that leaves this city for the south at 5 p m and the
