Show I GermanAmerican Catholic Congress BUFFALO Sept 22 Archbishop Kttze of Milwaukee today formally oponed the GermanAmerican Catholic congress as celebrant ot pontifical high mass The orator or-ator was Bishop Zandetti of St Cloud Minn He spoke in German Germany he < ygrenedio oaV8fatbtarmifl jgother < I I s ica l his bride They had left Germany were wedded to America and to the latter they should adhere He said they should learn the language of their new country but they were bound also in gratitude to remember and love the language of their mother The bishop closed with an eloquent elo-quent tribute to the American flag Following mass the lay portion of the huge congregation dispersed and the priests repaired to the first session of the Priester Verein I was held in strict privacy pri-vacy Notwithstanding the secresy maintained main-tained one of the members Father Hagen of St Louis declared nothing had taken place during the meeting which they would have objected to anybody knowing The only important proceeding was the adop tion of an extended constitution The name adopted is GermanAmerican Soci ety of Priests A decided sensation was caused today by an entrance effected into the second meeting of the Priester Verein by Father Iather Zurcker of Buffalo a nonmember who has severely criticised the association call ing it unAmerican Father Zurckers presence was discovered in short order and proceedings suspended until after af-ter ho had withdrawn Mr Conner of Dubuque spoke enthusiastically In favor of the following which was adopted Resolved That in order to preserve and cultivate the German language we recommend recom-mend Catholics to send their children to such institutions as teach the German language lan-guage besides English The session ended with the appointment of a committee on platform At tonights session to which the general public was invited a number of addresses by prominent promi-nent clergymen were given |
