Show ARIZONA FOR STATEHOOD Arizona is about to make an effort for statehood The last legislature passed an act calling a constitutional convention and Governor IRWIN has issued the necessary prescribed proclamation tor a general election elec-tion for the choosing of delegates to the convention for framing a state constitution The election takes place on the second Tuesday in May The number of delegates is twentytwo The convention will be held in the city of Phoenix on the first Monday in September 1391 and will frame a constitution con-stitution to be submitted i to the legal voters of the territory We hope our sister territory will succeed this time in shedding the swaddling clothes of political infancy and put on the garments more befitting her age and development There never was a more unjust thing perpetrated upon American citizens than territorial vassalage enforced beyond that period when the people of tho territory are capable and willing to assume I the responsibility of statehood Moreover I It is an unAmerican institution It belongs not to our system of government It is a a relic of monarchya parasite on our free institutions It Is out of harmony with tho grand principle announced in the immortal Declaration of Independence that governments govern-ments derive their just powers from the consent of tho governed It tends to corruption in government inasmuch inas-much as it throws into the hands of the party in power through the executive a great amount of patronage by which rewards may be given to zealous partisans for party service generally e4 vice of the worst kind performed by tenth rate politicians Thus it happens that zeal in that service rather than the consideration considera-tion of fitness for the place determines tho class of officers sent into a territory An institution that affords such opportunities for injustice and outrage ought to go It is going slowly perhaps but going nevertheless never-theless Eventually it will go even in Utah Even our territory misunderstood misrepresented despised hated as her in habitants have been will yet be accorded her place in the royal sisterhood of American states The splendid robes of state sovereignty will yet drape her beautiful form Columbia will hal her one of the brightest stars in the old flags crowded space assign her a place in the nations councils and give her a voice in shaping the destiny of the nation of which she forms a part You need not doubt it young men of Utah it will come Justice will not sleep nor will it miscarry Who thinks it will lie in the face of GOD and men 1 Though the heavens depart though the earths foundations burst yet will justice hold on her course carrying in her strong right hand the reward that patience pa-tience waits for Be of good cheer the morn in russet mantle clad walks oer the steep of our eastern hills giving promise of tho glorious day that is to come We have out lived much falsehood we shall outlive the rest Trutn will stand triumphant upon the grave of falsehood Those who have slandered the founders of Utahthe men who braved the wilderness and the desert i who endured untold hardships that Utah might be and who made the present commonwealth com-monwealth possiblethe wretches who have slandered these men the Benefactors of their race shall yetbe covered with confusion con-fusion and held up to the execration of the whole world Meantime we bid our sister territory in the south GOD speed in hereffort for statehood state-hood and we are cheered by the convictio that Utah will follow close upon her heels if she does not go into the union side by side I with her |
