Show THOSE GOLD BRICKS The Provo Swindle Creates a Big Excitement HOW ONE OF THE FRAUDS SLIPPED Caught by a Detect He Plays Innocent and I Allowed to Continue Ills Journey Alone The neat manner in which two goldbrick gold-brick sharps did up George C Whitmore the president of the First National bank of Nephi for 8000 created a big sensation here yesterday and it was difficult for those who are acquainted with Mr Whit more to believe that he had been duped by such an old trick I was a serious matter however with the victim and the chances I are that he is out something over 5000 in cold cash As stated in yesterdays HEUALD Officer Hills of Provo captured one of the sharpers at the Union Pacific depot on Tuesday night This man turned out to be Jim Sandford alias Tim Leonard and he is the fellow who played the part of the Spaniard Span-iard In the little game He was searched by the officer at the depot and 176 in currency cur-rency was found on him Deputy Sheriff Burbidge searched him again at the county jail and found some 700 additional care fully tucked away In the lining of his coat Sandford was taken down to Provo yesterday morning and the search for Allen alias Adkins his pal was vigorously proseouted throughout the day bat without with-out success From all that could be learned It appears that as soon a Allen arrived arrve here on Tuesday night he made a bee line for a barber shop and parted with his whiskers whis-kers He then started for Becks Hot Springs and enquired for a vehicle to convey con-vey him to Layton Mr Carngan the livery man happened to be at the springs and he took Allen to Layton in his buggy At that place the sharper engaged an old blacksmith to drive him to Ogden In the meantime Marshal Young and other officers offi-cers were in hot pursuit and Detective Franks took the train and reached the Junction city ahead of Allen He at once started down the road leading to Ogden and had only gone a short distance when he met the man he was looking tor Allens disguise succeeded I throwing the detective off the track and upon the old mans assurance that he and Sanford were blacksmiths they were allowed lowed to go on Marshal Young reached Ogden a short time afterwards and learned of the mistake that had been made but it was too late The strictest inquiry and search failed to throw any light on Allens whereabouts and the worn out officers returned re-turned home empty handed Yesterday afternoon it was rumored that Allen had been seen here but tho rumor was probably prob-ably unfounded The search is still being prosecuted with unremitting vigor and while it is possible that the man may yet be caught it is generally believed that the money will not be found on him |
