Show I "Li'v v v ... v f K7 i ) W , i Si IK' mi- BECKY BJORNN Athletics Feminine? By DAN E WIGHAM BOUNTIFUL For years the general opinion of girls who participated in athletics was that they weren't feminine. femi-nine. Becky Bjornn of Bountiful Bounti-ful isn't one of those who believes be-lieves that theory. "SOME honestly feel that athletics isn't the feminine thing to do. but you can be just as feminine in anything you do, it just depends mn how you act." Ms. Bjornn is living proof that beautiful young ladies can also participate in athletics. Becky not only participates in spurts she is very good at what she does. A YEAR ago as a junior on the Braves cross country team. Becky placed second in the state meet. Then in the spring she put on the spikes again and placed third in both the mile and two mile in the state meet. Becky has been involved in sports since the ninth grade back in Boise. Ida. As a sophomore sopho-more at Meredian High she won the state one-mile title and place fourth in the state cross country event. "Maybe it was because I was at a farm school, but more girls participated in sports there than do at Bountiful. Bounti-ful. They just don't accept girls athletics here like they do in Idaho." NOW, THE likeable senior runs about ten miles each day for her workouts, and she actually looks forward to the time when she can run. "It relaxes re-laxes me and takes my mind off everything for a little while." Even though she runs this much she still has to watch her weight like all other females. "I definitely have to watch what 1 eat." A YEAR ago Becky would literally run away from everyone every-one in her region dual meets, but this year she has a runner to face, "honestly if they held the state meet right now then Carolyn (Smith) would probably prob-ably win it. She's been working work-ing extremely hard and w ill be lough for me to beat." I he two teammates are friends and they have a friendly friend-ly rivalry going. "It's nice because be-cause we push each other. Last year there weren't that many good runners in the region re-gion and now I have a tough one on my own team to push me." Becky said. BEFORE A big race, though. Becky doesn't even think about the opposition. "I tell myself to just try to improve im-prove on myself as far as limes go. If I beat them then fine, but it's myself I'm trying to improve." im-prove." Becky went on to add thai running is all in ones altitude, "you have to put forth yourself to improve. You need the desire de-sire to improve and willingness to work for it." CROSS COUNTRY is run on the open road while track is run around the track, but Becky likes them both; "I enjoy en-joy the open road for just running, run-ning, but being on a track is a challenge and is more intense. Both should slay the way they are." No matter which one she is doing, running around a track or along a road. Becky is one of the best in the state. |
