Show i1 BOIES IS RENOMINATED For the Third Time He Will Lead Iowa Democrats TH PLATFORM ADOPTED President Clevelands Administration Is Heartily Commended The Present Unfortunate Financial Stringency I Strin-gency Chargeable to Republican Administration Ad-ministration The Use of Both Gold and Silver as Money Favored DES MOINES la Aug 23Henry Vollmer of Davenport in taking the chair as temporary presiding officer of the Democratic Dem-ocratic state convention which assembled here today said While the army of discontented dis-contented and unemployed swarms over the land there stalks up and down the highways in their midst a Republican Pharisee with the assurance of inbred hypocrisy hy-pocrisy pointing his finger at us and our party as the authors of this widespread misery I is high time repudiate this foul slander and stamp the life out of this crawling serpent Republican deception decep-tion We live it is true under a Democratic Demo-cratic administration both state and national but both in the state and the nation na-tion we are cursed by Republican laws Let us not forget nor permit the people to forget that we still have the blessed McKinley bill that latest but most developed offshoot of the poisonous plant protection Let us not forget no permit Congress to forget the unanswerable unan-swerable thesis of sound political economy econ-omy that our industries can never get on a healthy natural basis until this noxious weed is destroyed root and branch Panics are the necessary outgrowtu and never failing accompaniments of this artificial ar-tificial system which stimulates the growth abnormally in certain directions while it prevents expansion in others and finally compels the pampered favorites favor-ites to shake their own slime n the ever recurring spasms of over production Let us not forget especially that that cowardly makeshift denounced by the national platform last year the Sherman bill discredited now by its own author still stands upon the statute books Like Esau John Sherman sold his birthright for a mess of pottage when he lent his name to this unprincipled sell out when to serve the truckling demagogism of his party he threw to the winds the great financial reputation of the age in a last ineffectual attempt to capture votes for the Republican ticket by saving Harrison from the of unpleasant necessity vetoing a bill for the free coinage of silver His name will go down to posterity linked with the law which upheld by none but condemned by all is the great and suffi cient cause of our present financial distress dis-tress tressOur Our party is even held responsible for the condition of the treasury of the United States Yet four years ago it went out of power leaving a surplus of revenues to tho amount roundly stated of 103000 000 in the coffers of the national treasury When Secretary Carlisle barely five months ago cast his eagle eye into the strong box at Washington he found therein only the marks where Calico Charley had been scraping at the bottom of the bin Both the McKinley and Sherman Sher-man bills have got to go and the people will sustain us in the good work In the campaign before us the state issue only can be settled But in the state as in the nation we find that the will of the people repeatedly expressed in favor of a change of our laws is still unrealized un-realized and while the world admiringly beheld the triumphant election and reelection re-election of our grand old man Horace electon Jorce Boles as governor of Iowa we are still blessed with a set of blue laws that suggest sug-gest the ignorant intolerance of the dark ages rather than the broad minded liberalism liber-alism ot these latter days of the nineteenth nine-teenth century The indecent contortions contor-tions of the Republican party of Iowa on this great issue executing a veritable danse duventre on the slippery platform built in this city a week ago will soon gain for Iowa the name of the Midway Plaisance of American politics After the committees had been announced an-nounced the convention adjourned till 2 I p m Governor Boies said this morning that his letter declining to run a third time was sincere but he was willing to subordinate his wishes to the wishes of the Democratic party Governor Boies was renominated by acclamation ac-clamation amid tremendous applause Lieutenant Governor Bestow also received re-ceived arenominatipn At this point the report of the committee on platform was read and adopted The resolutions declare confidence in the administration of President Cleveland Cleve-land The present unfortunate financial stringency is laid at the door of the Republican Re-publican administration and Congress is urged to give the country early relief The Sherman act is denounced as a cowardly cow-ardly makeshift which has brought the present financial perils and troubles fnancial peris upon up-on the country The immediate immed-iate repeal of the silver purchase pur-chase clause thereof is denounced and tho use of gold and silver as money of the country on an equal basis favored I also demands that all paper currency shall be kept at par with and redeemable with such coin Just and liberal pensions to deserving veterans are favored In the interest of true temperance the passage is favored of a carefully guarded license tax law which shall provide for tho issuance of licenses by a vote of the people of the different districts in the state As a partial reparation for the unjust confiscation con-fiscation of private property caused by the prohibitary law we favor such legislation as will permit the manufacture cf spirituous vinous and malt liquors within the state thereby giving to our own people at least equal rights in this respect with manufacturers in other states Nominating of candidates was then continued con-tinued John Clajrgett of Mason city was nominated for judgeof the supreme court exCongressman Tom Brown of Council Bluffs for railroad commissioner and J lB Knoepfler was renominated for superintendent su-perintendent of public instruction Before the adjournment of the convention conven-tion John P Irish who has just returned from Washington made a vigorous speech in favor of the repeal of the Sherman Sher-man law It is the duty of every Democrat Demo-crat said he to sustain the present administration ad-ministration Democrats must sweep from the statute books line of every lne legislation legis-lation passed by the Republican party for expediency and sel power An adjournment adjourn-ment was finally taken after speeches by the nominees |
