Show WHICH H WHICH A couple of weeks ago two delegations left this city with more or less of n flourish for Minneapolis They were respectively composed of gentlemen who had been warring war-ring politically In this territory and who had carried their dislike of each other to such a length that they seldom or never spoke as they passed by They went away in special cars bearing banners and bunting bunt-ing and shouting loudly of the triumphs awaiting them in the Republican national convention Each of these delegations claimed to be tho duly accredited representative repre-sentative of the Utah Republican party and each exhibited regular credentials of the namebiowninthebottle nonogenu inowithcutthesignature variety Each delegation declared that it was determined to obtain recognition and one declared that if it did not get full recognition it would accept nothing Whether or not the other said as much publicly some of tho sympathizers With the delegation said it privately and meant itthen Both delegations proceeded to tho convention con-vention city both presented their claims to the national party there assembled both claims were denIed and both accepted and both delegations were admitted to seats with tho privilege of dividing the two ballots accredited to the territory between them Up to this point honors were easy neither delegation having the advantage over the other There was a defeat of both and both accepted it in meekness and humiliation They apparently forgot all about full recognition or nothing and were glad to get anything Next there was another honor to be given out the position in the national committee One of the delegations del-egations had already fixed upon the man and sent in his name Too other delegation delega-tion which had been accorded half tho power in the premises objected to tho selection se-lection and wanted one of Its own choosing He was not satisfactory to tho first and In order to obtain tho place at all it became necessary nec-essary to agree upon a third party which was done the compromise candidate being duly commissioned The only remaining honors woro tho positions on the notification noti-fication committees and these were also apportioned between the contesting factions fac-tions It seems to be a case of horde and horse on every point raised It is easy enough to see defeats all along the line but just whore the victories of either faction como In will puzzle the best guesser to designate The contending factions the competing delegations In this play of politics which i I < He J11 > has been goidg on for these weeks are tho socalled straight Republicans and the POWERS or Tuscarora Republicans The newspaper organ of the latter has all i through tho contest been claiming the triumphs on their side and the delegation has mostly returned backing up this assumption expressing surprise that the opposition should profess anything but defeat On the other hand the straight Republicans appear astonished to learn that the Liberal wing of the party claims any sort of a victory saying the POWERS faction obtained only what was conceded by the regulars through courtesy and in the hope of conciliating the Liberals and leading them into an acceptance of tho division movement Some of the straights even go RO far as to say the Liberal representatives I rep-resentatives made overtures to the regulars to fix up a peace which would result in uniting the factions upon their return to Utah This is the status of affairs as to tho Minneapolis business while throughout the territory men claiming to be Republicans Republi-cans are puzzled and perplexed They dont know which of the local organizations is tho Republican party and are wondering to whiili their allegiance is due The national na-tional convention by its action has said that neither or both or either is the simonpuro Republican organization but straight Republicans ao not want it that way saying if Liberals are Republicans then tuey the straights must be something some-thing else and the Liberals express more intense hatred than over against the straights for havintr deprived them of a complete triumph at Minneapolis It looks to us from a disinterested standpoint stand-point as if the national convention had made a bad matter worse forcing upon the local Republicans of all factions tho necessity neces-sity of continuing the contest for four years longer until another national convention conven-tion can determine authoritatively which organization is Republican and which is a faction It looks an if the whole outfit could more properly promenade in sackcloth sack-cloth and ashes It also look as if the rank and file disgusted with the treatment accorded them by the national party and tired of the bickerings and quarrels among the local leaders would soon desert the party and como over to tho Democratic procession where peace prevails and jCrifo is unknown I |
