Show REID AND THE PRINTERS A Statement to Be Published Relative to the Allowed Settlement NEW YORK June 10Tho Tribune will tomorrow publish a statement prepared by the officials of Typographical union No G relative to the adjustment of the differences between tho union and the Trihitnr which has been pronounced by Whitelaw i Reid i i to I ba accurate The statement relates in detail de-tail the various steps in the negotiations for settlement which began nearly two years ago while Reid was minister to France The correspondence between Reid and tho union shows the latter bad accepted all that was practically applicable to the Tribune office He held the Tribune was a linotype office while the organization was one of composition the trade was absolutely I abso-lutely Different and a knowledge of composition com-position was not necessary also that he was paying the highest wages and I would gladly cooperata with the union in maintaining or oven advancing them Finallj when Reid returned to this country i was proposed by the union that the same plan be adopted which bud been successfully success-fully employed in the settlement with tbo Indianapolis Journal and other newspapers that employing as foreman of the Tribune office a member of tho union in good standing stand-ing This proposition was promptly accepted ac-cepted Mr Reid chOse William Bren nan late president of the union thereby proving his perfect faith in f i 1 c H r J r tbo organization Brennan is now I foreman of the Tribune composing I room This honorable settlement is as satisfactory to the union as to Mr Reid and the fact was demonstrated by the appearance of the committee to represent tho union and appointed for that purpose at the recent Republican convention Tho action thus taken was voluntary |
