Show AS IT STANDS There are a few men in this community 1 who profess to believe that Mr POWERS I undhis associate will obtain recognition at the Chicago convention as theTepresenta I urea of the Utah Democracy THE HERALD is Ignorant of the process of reasoning by which these people have reached that belief I be-lief add as the matter is of little or no importance we shall not attempt to solve the mystery Some time ngo a gentleman gentle-man apparently sane and certainly in good standing In this community brought to this pfllce an elaborate manuscript demonstration dem-onstration that the region of the north polo was tropical as to climate and products and that the country I 1 up there was inhabited by people much farther advanced in civilization nud in the arts and sciences than were tho foremost of known races As he was sane apparently Intelligent and not of the crank order he was asked how he had arrived at the conclusions mentioned when ho replied re-plied that he knew it He seemed annoyed an-noyed at the ignorance which refused to purchase or print his manuecrlpt which he proposed to follow with another elaborating elabor-ating a feasible and easy plan for establishing establish-ing communication and trade relations with tho people of the pole It was not worth while arguing with him and it is not worth while trying to convince the Tuscaroraa of the ludicrousness of their professed belief Toe latter seem to bo determined to think and act without regard re-gard tp reason or common sense and it would bo a waste of effort wero one to try to convince them against tho position they want to assume TUE HERALD has never experienced the slightest apprehension that Chicago would pay any attention to the claims of Mr POWERS or would do otherwise than promptly and without question recognize Messrs HEKDEHSOX and CAINE as tho I representatives of the Utah Democracy To have given place to a doubt or fear in the premises woald have been to distrust the national Democracy and question the politics of the gentlemen composing the convention Tho convention was called by the Democratic national committee the call being addressed to the Democrats of the states and territories the Democratic organizations of the various political divisions di-visions of the country being invited or instructed in-structed to take the necessary steps to send properly accredited delegations to the national gathering There was but one Democratic organization in thin territory and its record is straight and regular regu-lar covering a period of twenty years without a break 1 his organization or-ganization acting under the authority author-ity and by the direction of the national na-tional committee proceeded in the regular manner to choose delegates to the convention conven-tion and these being duly commissioned will necessarily be admitted to the convention conven-tion and recognized as representing the Utah Democracy There will be nothing else for the convention to do It cannot recognize any other delegation for there can be no other delegation accredited by or representing the Democracy of the territory ter-ritory Others may present themselves at the doors of tho convention and ask to be admitted to the Utah scats but that will amount to nothing any more than would the application by Catholic priests to take part in a Presbyterian synod It is tho credentials which will decide tho certificates certifi-cates given by the authorized officials of the Democratic party These credentials are held by Judge HENDERSON and Delegate CAIXE If the convention or one of its committees were disposed through courtesy or otherwise other-wise to inquire into the local situation with regard to the standing and strength of the parties the Tuscaroras would bo laughed out of the contest instead of being courteously turned down The Democracy as represented by Messrs HENDERSON and CAINE are on record as casting more votes at the last election than all other parties and factions combined That fact of itself would settle any contest in a Democratic convention But added to it is the further fact that one of the Tuscarora delegates has been for years was at the very election elec-tion referred to and is still the chairman of the central committee and the directing power and spirit of the antiDemocratic party There is another fact which is that the fellow delegate of the Liberal boss only last fall was a candidate for office on a ticket in opposition to tho regular reg-ular Democratic nominee and was defeated in his own town No Democrats are In doubt as to the action ac-tion which the convention will take provided pro-vided POWERS and his mate shall have the impudence to present themselves and ask for recognition The only doubt is as to whether or not the Tuscaroras will ba able to purchase tickets of admission to the spectators gallery |
