| Show DR MGLYXX CELEBRATES MASS L riLe First Occasion of the Kind In Eight Years New York Dec 25The Rev Dr Edward McGlynn celebrated solemn high mass at the Church of the Holy CEOSS on Fortysecond street at 430 L this morning It was the first occasion in which Father McGlynn had been c the celebrant of high mass in a church in this city during the past eight years and the immens concourse which gathered to greet him this morning returned with augmented numbers seven hours later to hear his sermon The gatherings which thronged the church at 430 and 11 oclock this morning morn-ing were probably the most fashionable fashion-able and numerous assemblages which have ever filled the edifice At the early service moss the Rev Father Smith officiated as deacon dea-con and Rev Father MeGews as Bubdeacon After the first gospel McGlynn spoke briefly referring to the portentious significance of the days celebrations and calling attention atten-tion tc the sacred character of the anniversary Before 10 oclock the seats of the church were half filled ith persons desiring to attend the arochial mass when It had been an ounced Father McGlynn would de iver the sermon By 11 oclock the aisles were packed to BTI Inconvenient degree and after that hour it was impossible im-possible to gain admission to the church So full was the church that many ladles were compelled to leave before the services had fairly commenced com-menced The regular congregation was almost outnumbered by Roman Catholics from St Slovenes parish of which Dr McGlynn was formerly pastor The old parishioners of the famous divine joined in extending their former pastor a hearty and impressive im-pressive Christmas greeting At the conclusion of the gospel Father Mc Glynn preached Ills sermon He took e no special text simply weaving his remarks around the lessons taught in the epistle of SU John and the gospel for the day His sermon however was more of a conventional Christmas discourse He touched on no matte concerning his difficulty with Archbishop Arch-bishop Corrigan Glory to God on high and on earth and peace and good will was the theme of his address This afternoon Dr McGlynn partook of a Christmas dinner with the Rev Drs Smith McGee McGraay Scanlan Keefe and several invited friends A presentation was made to Father Mc Glynn of a purse collected for him by his friends |
