Show PROTECTION OF GAME A LifeLong Sportsman Talks About the Yellow stone He Found a Lodge In the Wilderness for His Family Government and Private Game Preserves John D Sargeant is a young man 35 years of age who might be taken for aNew a-New York club man He dresses well and talks like a person accustomed to the usages of good society THE HERALD reporter re-porter fell into his good graces at the Templeton the other evening and was surprised sur-prised at learning that he had never lived within fifty miles of a railroad for two years during his life time He was born in Washington county Maine which while containing 140000 population has no railroad Sir Sargeant has been a sportsman all his life Early in 1880 ho went to Wyoming and camped on a promontory in the northwest corner of Jacksons lake on the south side of Yellowstone Yel-lowstone park Her he burt a comfortable com-fortable home in which he and his family have resided His nearest neighbor is Captain Anderson the present manager of the park who may be eight or eighty miles from his habitation according to the part oUhe park he is patrolling In this lonesome spot Mr Sergeant finds his most congenial surroundings his gun his family his dogs and plenty of wild game His youngest daughter now four years of age never tasted any other meat than that of deer antelope bear and the flesh of other wild game until she ate at the Temp ton This mite of a girl rode the tr lil witi her father a distance of eighty mil > s and had to camp out two nights dur n the trip GAtE AND POACHEES Mr Sargeant says that the game o the Yellowstone park has been bettor protected pro-tected from poachers during the time Captain Anderson has been in chi rg than ever before The captain expects to establish patrol stations on the confines of the park at such distances as will enable the solciers to patrol the entire line and in this nay make it impossible for any person to kill any game without being apprehended When asked if the game did not wander away from the park he said t tat when they did they would always r m back when attacked They have learn d that the park offers them better security and it makes no difference which way the wind blows they will always head for tt o Yellowstone when danger confronts them AIT IMPRACTICABLE PROJECT Mr Sargeant does not think that the project of establishing a large game pre serve by a club of individuals canbe successfully suc-cessfully carried out for Americans will never respect the rights of individuals to wild game when running loose It was tried in the Adirondacks under more favorable circumstance for protection than could be expected in the west There was no end to the wrangles the club got into There is no sentiment In this country against peaching on large private estates The Yellowstone being owned by the government rnment all honorable sportsmen respect this effort and will never molest the game |
