Samuel Samuels and C G Watson Details of the Disaster COLORADO SPBINGS Dec 23jSpecial A most disastrous wreck occurred near Husted station about fifteen miles north of thia place at 130 this morning Santa Fe train No8 the through California express which leaves Denver at 1105 each evening with four cars left the track and plunged down a fifty loot embankment em-bankment splintering the cars t fragments E frag-ments and injuring a large number of people two of whom will die The train was running at nearly forty miles per hour when the wreck occurred and the f great wonder is that everybody in the cars was not instantly killed Fire broke out in the wreck almost immediately and added terrors to the scene The two most seriousjy injured are two Denver boys i named Van Leon dying in a hospital in this ciy J The first that any one on board tho train knew of trouble was when the cars began bumping along the track Only p the baggage car which was next t the engine remained on the track The express ex-press c turned over on its side andS and-S rolled down the embankment standing Ion I-on its head at the foot of the slope completely com-pletely upside down The smoking car followed and immediately took fire The flames spread t the next car which was the day coach The front end of the day coach was upon top of the embankment and the other end at the bottom This car caught fire from the other and both were completely com-pletely destroyed The Pullman turned on its side on the other side of the embankment em-bankment The accident is ascribed oy some to a spreading of the rails while by others it is charged t faulty wheels The character of the accidentpoints to the spreading of rails The Santa Fe immediately immedi-ately sent out a relief train with physicians physi-cians and a wrecking crew on board Engineer Weis of Denver was in charge of the train He and Fireman Lillas of La Junta were both uninjured When the train was stopped it was right in the end of bridge No 102 which crosses a gully fuLy fifty feet deep The tender of the engine got off the track but the engine itself remained on Congressman Lafe Pence and wife were on the train but vcre uninjured Dr O 1 Spencer of this city the Santa Fe r surgeon i now attending the injured a large portion of whom were taken t the Almo hospital When the wreck train returned t this city about 730 this morning a horrible sight was presented as the train men carried car-ried the people out of the train on stretchers Some of them were taken t the St Francis hospital east of the city and some to the Colorado Springs one of the passengers on the train said We were riding along at the usual rate of I speed when suddenly the car made a lurch to side then to the other t one t side I and turned over rolling down the embankment em-bankment It immediately caught flea from the stove I was slightly stunned but walked along the car and met McDonald McDon-ald We tore the door from its hinges and were none too soon for some children who were uer the stove were crying they were burning up I a not badly injured only 3 slight ecalp wound and as you see i3 > ttcnding t business as usual 1 the passengers in the wrecked train gave the train crew much credit for the b I brave manner in which they came t the rescue The heroic work of Conductor W S Ammon is especially worthv of mention and the injured that are at the I Alamo were unanimous in their praise of him himThe The Van Leon family were especially unfortunate Will aged fourteen and Bert aged twelve were fatally injured bu the family sustained serious loss financially financi-ally Mrs Van Leon said We were on our way to Oakland Cal We were in the day coaches and were making ourselves I our-selves comfortable for the night when suddenly the coach turned over and it is hard to tell just what happened next I The cries and groans of the wounded together gether with the smoke from the burning car made indescribable confusion Finally Fin-ally the door was burst open and we were I helped out My two boys were then unconscious un-conscious and my little girl Myrtle could not be found A man found her under a Set and brought her out The waist of my dress was torn off In i was 5O inch in-ch and a gold watch which were lost in i the fire My husband my mother and myself fortunately received only small bruises |
