| Show TIE RCVUMJE BILL Intense Feeling Because of Its Rejection Re-jection by the House The revenue bill presented by Warner War-ner polished by the ways and means committee and finally considered in the House discussed and amended for the best part of a week now lies like the II corpse of a man who has passed through i the guillotine with its many excellencies excel-lencies nearly forgotten With its eri acting clause stricken out by a seemingly I ingly determined and overwhelming I majority It appears as though the work over which some of the best business men and attorneys of Weber county spent months of their time was useless use-less That the work was done with such neatness and dispatch was due to the stand taken by Allen and other Republican Repub-lican leaders in the House The members mem-bers frort Weber and many of the visitors vis-itors from that county who have listened lis-tened to thp consideration of the bill have been inclined to believe that they were intentionally insulted by Allen from the first What is more they do not attribute this tand of his to any patriotic motives but simply to his desire to make political capital for himself him-self and in doing so to oppose anything that does not emanate from him or will not directly benefit him The prime cause of the defeat nf the bill was the dispute over the taxation of mortgages The clause making tbe exemption was stricken out a few days ago on a vote of 12 to 1 and it was understood at the time that the mortgage mort-gage taxers would oppose the icasure unless the provision was reinstated The attempt to reinstate was finally made yesterday but the lack of a two thirds majority with which to suspend the rules made it Impossible for a good majority on the question to do any an thing The Weberits blame Allen Varian Johnson and several others who are In favor of the taxation of mortgages for not withdrawing their opposition to the reinstatement of the clause in order to save the bill but these members in spite of all the urging remained firm and caused Its defeat Therefore the wrath of Weber is upon them The evidence of the feeling that has been excited by this attitude on the part of the Republican members from Salt Lake is seen in the action < ri Messrs Stanford and Warner who re fused to take part in the Republican caucus held on Saturday morning and are now holding themselves aloof from any party arrangements They do not want any more gratuitous insults and will endeavor In the hereafter to steer clear of any matter that will bring them on To them this proposition was a serious one and they can see no vir ture in the attitude assumed towards it The bill may be reinstated today ns Stanford has given notice that he will move to reconsider the vote by which the enacting clause was stricken out but Jn spite of the fact that this Is considered to be the best revenue bill ever presented to an Utah legislature this is a doubtful proposition unless some agreement Is reached on the question ques-tion of taxation of mortgages As isIs is-Is there are several of thfr members who say they will kill any bill that will ex errtrit mortgages from taxation and these will align themselves against the measure if this objectionIs withdrawn white themembers on the other side of the question seem equally determined determin-ed In the meantime the people of Weber L l F are anxiously awaiting the decision on his measure One disgusted man from hat county remarked that if the bill does not go through Weber will go overwhelmingly Democratic at the next election as the people have already suffered too much from the present revenue law and they looked to this legislature for relief Their ten reance will be swift and sure and will be placed to the credit of those to whom It belongs The chief support of the autonomy of the measure having been given by the Democrats who were friendly to it until the Republicans had made It obnoxious in several ways they will reap the benefit |
