Show 2nd In Series WBA Conflicts Don't Allow For Two Items was getting his points. Anything Any-thing that can help the team we like to put in. Like rebounds, assists and steals." SO HERE comes a rookie just drafted and he"s trying to decide w hat type of contract to sign. '"If he signs a five year contract the security is there somewhat, but w hat if he turns out to be a great player and he's still locked into the amount of money he signed for as a rookie." noted Ben Po-quette. Po-quette. The name of the game in this league is the money. Sign a short term contract, build up your reputation and then re-negoiate re-negoiate for more money when he's an established player. HAVE YOU ever wondered what the five and six year players play-ers in the league are thinking when these rookies sign for twice the money they get. "Some of the veterans it bothers and others it doesn't. You have to think that they haven't ha-ven't proven themselves in the league but then it's obvious they have some talent," noted Mr. Poquette. Once the player signs on the dotted line he becomes property proper-ty of that club for the amount of time stipulated in the contract con-tract unless he is traded during that time. A ROOKIE can report to rookie camp without a contract, con-tract, all they have to sign is a medical release form. But any that are invited back to veterans veter-ans camp need the contract. Some teams might take into consideration a contract if a player change is needed. The Jazz aren't in that boat though. "We don't consider that" added Dave Freedman, "We had John Ginelle and Pete Maravich on guarantee contracts con-tracts and cut them and had to pay up. Same w ith Ron Boone and Brett Vroman last year. We figure the team that starts worrying about that will keep themselves in trouble." SO THERE you are. Anything, Any-thing, with the exception of trades and deferred payments, can be written in the contract. Make sure that everything is down in black and white because be-cause that is a legal binding document. Bonuses must also be written in, if a player scores 100 points in a game the team can't just give him a big bonus unless it's in his contract. Incentives In-centives are good if pointed toward to-ward a team effort, put them down. Next week we take a look at the free agent route. By DAVE WIG HAM Editors Note: This is part two of a five part series on the NBA. Today we deal with contracts: As far as the National Basketball Bas-ketball Association is concerned con-cerned there are only two things that you can not have in your contract. Number one, anything about not being able to be traded. A player can , and will, be traded when and to where the club says. Years ago they could have a contract that enabled them to veto a trade, much like the baseball contracts. con-tracts. THE ONLY other no-no in NBA contracts is that no more than 30 percent of the money can be deferred, which means exactly what it states. If, say. a player signs for five years for 300 million dollars then only 90 million dollars of that amount can be paid after the five years. Sounds like big bucks but down the road with the way salaries are going who knows? Two types of contracts in the league are what are known as "guaranteed" and "no-cut." "no-cut." The guaranteed contract simply means that once the player signs with a team for two years at a certain amount of money then that club has to pay that money no matter w hat happens. If the player is dropped drop-ped from the team that team still has to pay him the money. In this case it must be clearly written in the contract that the money is guaranteed. AN EXAMPLE of this is that last year part of Brett Vromans contract was guaranteed money and even though the Jazz dropped him from the club they still had to honor the contract and give him the money. The no-cut contract simply means that the club canno! cut the player, he has made the team the second he signs the contract. This type of contract is rare in the NBA and the fact is that no member of the Jazz has such a contract. A BIG part of the contract now has become the incentives. incen-tives. Giving more money for reaching goals. Things like number of rebounds in the year, minutes played, blocked shots, making an all-star team, being named rookie of the year just about, anything that a player or management can agree on. Last year Darrell Griffith received re-ceived $25,000 in incentive money for being named rookie of the year by the league. A TEAM in the NBA, San Antonio, has an incentive clause in all their players contracts con-tracts that they receive more money forevery win past 35 on the year. According to some sources this is being outlawed 1 in the league, simply because 1 many feel they are already getting get-ting paid handsomely to win. Dave Freedman of the Jazz sees both, sides, "we don't put scoring as an incentive simply 1 because the guy might not care about the wins as long as he |
