Show ORGANIZED THIEVES I A SYNDICATE EMPLOYIXG BOYS TO COMMIT PETTY ROBBERIES Brig Clmpman and Walter Birmingham Birming-ham Arrested By Sheriff McQueen The Officers After the Principals of the Organization < A preliminary examination before Commissioner Greenman today will doubtless elicit the fact that there exists ex-ists in Salt Lake city a syndicate of men who employ boys to carry on a system of petty peculation for a percentage per-centage of the profits to be derived For some time Sheriff McQueen has been in possession of information from people living south of the city to the effect that a large portion of portable property has been carried away at various times and that within the last few weeks their rtonrsrta Hons were es Dredatons 1 pecially annoying Patrick Ryan who lives just east of Calders farm has on his premises a brickmaking machine with engine and boiler attachments from which all the brasses were taken and considerable of the iron work The sheriff at once took the matter up and began an Investigation Investiga-tion On Friday last two boys were noticed at the brick machine loading something into a wagon When approached ap-proached they let go all holds and took to their heels Examination Examinaton of the wagon showed that the lads were engaged en-gaged in loading the grate bar Sheriff McQueen was notified and took possession of the horse and wagon which he still has in his charge Ere long owners were found for both the 1 horse and harness being claimed by a man named Thomas who resides on First South and Second West the wag on coming from Palmers livery on Fourth South Despite all demands the sheriff refused to give them up un t he had completed his case Last night Brig Chapman and Walter Birmingham two boys were arrested I I as being the pair seen on Ryans place and were landed in the county jail I Questioned by the sheriff the former admitted hiring the horse and wagon but averred that he gave it to two other boys whom he did not know Chap man denied having any complicity with complciywih the matter Both lads told very dis jointed stories tales replete with an achronisms and were evidently ill at ease j The sheriff believes that when called upon to face the music in court caled i Birmingham will confess and name his accomplices I is remarkable to say i the least that men should rent horses etc to mere children who chIdren announce that they are going out in the country I for iron That opinion is the sheriffs who declares that he will sift the mat ter to the bottom |
