Show WILL THEY FOLLOW SUIT r We wonder how Messrs Allen and James and the members of the newly oranized Republican club in the Fifth precinct feel over the name of their society The Republican organ announces an-nounces in one column that Sir C E Allen suggested that the club callltself the John P Jdnes club and Mr W F James seconded the suggestion with an eloquent speech eulogizing eu-logizing the Nevada senators long and noble fight in behalf of silver and lead and protection Thename was adopted adop-ted without dissent The John P Jones club thereupon elected officers Having called themselves by the I name of the great silver senator of course the members of the club and I Messrs Allen and James the sponsors i will be prepared to endorse the sentiments senti-ments of that eminent advocate of i the white metal In another column of the same paper he is reported as expressing himself thusly Having become fully convinced the Republican party organization is unalterably unal-terably opposed to the free coinage of silver at the ratio of 16 to 1 or at all except with the consent of foreign governments gov-ernments and at a ratio to be dictated by them I have to announce I can no longer act with this party It was on the evening of Tuesday that the club was christened John P Jones It was later at night that the name of John P Jonef repudiation of the Republican party arrived If the club follows the noble example of the gentleman whose name it bears all will be plain sailing If not well it will be a palpable inconsistency but that does not seem to trouble Republicans Repub-licans much as their whole system is pregnant with inconsistencies It is safe to say however that if the dispatch had arrived earlielin the day Messrs Allen and James would not have been so ready to name the club Jones at night And as a prominent prom-inent Democrat remarked when crowds of people were laughing on the Fifth ward contretemps it is never sate to name a baby after a prominent person until after the individual is dead |
