greet tho orators who came down from the capital to address them on the subject of Democracy There were present on the stand Judge Henderson David Evans William H King Judge W N Dusenberry D D Houtz E A Wilson William H Brown J E Daniels Dr Julius Hannber A D Gash James A Melville Mr McCulston and many others The banner which has been heretofore spoken of in THE HERALD was presented to the Democratic drum corps A neat speech was made by Miss Mabel Thurman and re sponded to by Benjamin Waiton of the drum corps The audience was called to order by Chair man D D Houtz who presented JUDGE HENDERsON He spoke with most telling effect and charac teristic earnestness After paying a tribute to the immortal Jefferson whose portrait ap poared on the Democratic banner he delineated deline-ated the history of Democracy and Republican ism from the time that most eminent body mrt in Philadelphia wherein the Jeffersoniun and Haruiltoman idea of government was first uls cussed Hamilton believed the government should be ruled by a body of men elected for life and so repugnant Mr Jelltrs n to that system that he stepped out and organized the I Democratic party to contend for the liberty of the people of the United States The speaker d splayed a profound knowledge of the wor of I the party of his choice an JL the political work of other parties lie aptly illustrated the sys tems of taxation instituted by the party now in power which encouaage the forming of syndicates syndi-cates of monopoly The distress of the farmers far and wide was depicted with the most pa thetlo effect The time has come when these things must stop The nation is crying loudly for it The audience became hilarious In the tariff il lustrations He thought it simply laughable I that the Republicans should assume that the I tariff did not affect the price of an article When a Republican tells you th s dont argue with him simply look him in the face and laugh After the great Chicago fire Congress did the city the geat good of giving it free trade for the purpose of rebuilding the city The city of Portland was rebuilt in the same manner When you corner a Republican by bringing him face to face with Democratic argument he begins to tell you there was a war and a rebel lion Tbepeople of Utah are as fuly prepared to take national political issues as the people of any part of the globe The Democratic party is going to tight on every itch of ground in the United btates > He referred to the Home Rule bill and the tactics of tho Republicans in delaying and opposing it If the people of the tenitory will stand Liberals to the contrary notw ilestandlng The Mandolin club gave a selection HON DAVID EVANS referred to tbe manner in which he and Mr Graham used to pay their respects to one another and the btterness which used to exist in the old parties and he was happy to know that the time had come when every man in Utah could grasp hands as American citizens He made a strong plea in favor of absolutely i abandoning the old parties The R p Van j I Inkle of tho Liberal party declares that I affairs in this territory are the same as they j I wore twentyfive years ago The Democrats I and Republicans alike should fight the Liberal party until there is no vestgie left The Home I Rule bill was vindicated and the speaker re marked that every people should have the right to govern themselves In speaking of the ticket ho designated Judge iV N Dusenberry as the greatest benefactor of Provo No man can cast a stigma upon that grand mans character He referred to all the Demoratio candidates and paid them many compliments J E Booth was spoken of as having struck the down grade Nothing of a villif ying nature was spoken against the Republican ticket HON W H KING cave Judge Dusenberry the benefit of a glowing tribute He believed the very bet administra tion would be given under this man with the able men who are under him The Teller bill was denounced as a delusion and a snure If our Republican friends want a constitution why dont they adopt tho one now in Congress D D HOUTZ stated that on the night of the 23th a good ticket was made up and ho believed in voting it without a scratch NOTES Tonight there will be a torchlight procession and bonfires burned along the streets Judge Dusenberry was given three cheers and a tiger for a short speech There was a fine speech after which Judge Dusenberry compared the platform i of the two parties and showed some vast differences differ-ences The rod line of aristocracy was traced through that of the Republicans
