Show Methods for Teaching tho Deaf and Dumb Special to THE HERALD Examiner Dispatch NEW YoiiE Feb 5The Heralds Paris special says Prof Wilkinson president of the California institute for the deaf dumb and blind leaves Paris today for Rome During the last few weeks ho has been making inquiries into tho condition ind education of the deaf and dumb in England and France Today he told me he was not likely to tako any improved ideas from the systems here The Americans Ameri-cans have improved Abbe do Lepees system sys-tem by adopting what is known us the combined system whero signs and mental men-tal alphabet are used as a means of instruction instruc-tion My visit said the professor has been undertaken mainly to see whether the same intellectual result is obtained in Europe Eu-rope by oral methods that is obtained in the United States by the combined s stem s-tem where articulation is taught as an accomplishment So far I have not found Europe up to tho American standard in intellectual results obtained in the education educa-tion of the deaf mute Prof Wilkinson will probably return in July In the interval he will spend two months in England and another month in the French schools on his return from Italy Before I left him the professor said The public education of the deaf end blind in Europe bears a striking contrast con-trast to that prevalent in America In Europe Eu-rope it seems to be looked upon as a sort of charity This applies even to England In America it is of tho public school Ameria part publc system sys-tem which is never regarded as charity The whole point of difference lies in the fact that wo desire to make anything of those who are educated in the public institutions insti-tutions while it seems to be the desire to make mechanics of them in England |
