Show 1 THE IDAHO OUTLOOK It is a mighty mean campaign that tho Republicans of Idaho aro making butthat is natural nnd to be expected It wouldnt be Republican if it werent mean The meanest part of the business is the strcss laid on the Mormon question as if that were a live issue in the new state There is cot ono intelligent Republican in Idaho who does not know tat the Mormon is absolutely of Idaho politics that the solo interest that the Mormon has up therein there-in political contests is in disinterestedly watching the combatants Every Republican Repub-lican who possesses average degree of common senso knows first that the Mormons Mor-mons cnnnot vote if they want to the state laws forbidding it the constitution forbidding forbid-ding it and the United States supreme I court upholding the prohibition second t that if the Mormons could vote a wusiflerablo percentage of them perhaps per-haps a maJoritywould not vote the Democratic ticket The Republicans know this quite as well as THE HCKALD does and THA HcijAtJ knows it to be a fact We may wish Hf vas otherwise but it is not Wo bell tHhat a majority of tho Idaho Monnousare Democratic in their sentiments senti-ments and that they believe in the principles prin-ciples of the part but we know that they have no love for the leaders of the party in Idaho ari d that they would enjoy rather than grieve over the aefeat ot those leaders lead-ers It is stating a wellknown fact I which has been told so many times and is I well understood in the state that the Mormons I Mor-mons in Idaho bold the Democrats responsible respon-sible for the unfortunate and anomalous anom-alous iosition in which the former have been placed If the Democratic leaders had been manly and courageous coura-geous if they had been Democrat in something more than name the infamous test oath would not now bo in the books and 25000 people who had offended nobody and broken no law either statutory or moral would not now be without citizenship citizen-ship and political outcasts subject to the kicks and cuffs of all parties and deprived of the right and power to defend themselves I them-selves much less to retaliate It is in history his-tory and cannot be denied that the Democrats Demo-crats of Idaho through ccwardice rather than desire were more vindictive and hate ful in their persecution of the Mormons than the Republicans the honorable exceptions excep-tions being few in number and those of the latter who figure couspiciously in the councils of the party fewer still The leaders among the Idaho Mormons and their newspapers do not hesitate to explain ex-plain that they have excellent memories and that their love for the bosses of the Democratic party is not a whit stronger than is their affection for the Republicans who have at least been politically consistent 4 consist-ent in their persecutions I All this is well known to the Republicans Repub-licans and yet they are trying to make it appear that there is an alliance between I the Democrats and Mormons that the I latter will vote although the registration and election machinery is entirely in the hands antiMormons and that the chief issae in the present fight is the Mormon who has been completely eliminated from = the politics of the state We say it is a I mean campaign that the Republicans aro making it is a dishonest campaign as well I I I In onr opinion it displays Republican weakness weak-ness and is a confession that the party is in desperate straits when it has to resort to J falsification and rely upon the success of Its efforts to bamboozle and deceive the people I Tnt HEUAJD of course does not know what will bo the result of the election next week but there are some things upon which we feel justified in basing a guess The Republicans are manifestly mani-festly in distress and are giving evidenpes of desperation They are also divided the hunger and greed of the leaders for office having broken the party into factions which are knifinp t each other It is war to the death between certain of the bosses who would bring failure fail-ure upon the party rather than that their competitors should triumph over them On the other hand the Democrats are united as never before In no instance have the ambitions of men been permitted to stand in the way of the success of the party individual In-dividual aspirations have been subordinated subordi-nated and the good of the Demoracy has apparently actuated all Democrats are working together harmoniously and they are working and talking like men who expect ex-pect to win If they do not succeed it vill be because the Republicans are in control of tho election machinery and will practice the ballotbox stuffing and other frauds by which they have in the past held power and defeated the will of the people As the campaign progresses and the time for the electisn approaches we grow more and more hopeful and yot firmer in our belief that the Idaho Democrats will rescue the new state from the clutches of the spoilers and give it a fair start |
