Show TerribleAVreck on the Rio Grande DESVEK Colo Sept 6rSpecial telegram I tele-gram to THE HERALD j Two carloads of Italian laborers were started west from I Pueblo early this morning for work on the track below Glenwood Springs and at Tennessee tunnel Eleven of them were from this city and thirtyseven from Pueblo They were in two old day coaches attached to the first section of freight No 6 which was closely followed by a second section When near mile post 133 four miles east of Florence a portion of the first section left the track and before L proper signals could be sent back the second sec-ond section came crashing into them with terrific force smashing tho old coaches into splinters and mixing the forty eight men in an inextricable mass with the broken timbers All of the train men on thu first section escaped as they were looking after the derailed cars So violent was the concussion that a portion of the wreck was thrown upon the Santa Fe track which here runs near that of the Rio Grande Five laborers were taken from the wreck dead and terribly crushed Jfortythree others were all more or less injured and were removed as fast as possible pos-sible to Florence Cool creek and Canon City where local surgeons attended them An extra train conveyed surgeons sent from this city and their number was added p t at Pueblo Everything possible was done for the injured men The Italian consul con-sul here was notified early and at the request re-quest of the railroad officers went to Florence t look after his injured countrymen country-men several of whom it is believed cannot can-not survive All of them are Italians some newly arrived but quite a number have families in Pennsylvania where they have been working in the coal mines In addition addi-tion t the other damages seven cars of fruit in the first section and two in the I second section were badly damaged The track was not cleared until this evening The dead are H L Winters Idaho Springs Colorado Jonathan Falks Pueblo A M Meyer Pueblo James Donovan Pueblo C B Williams Leadville Those most seriously injured are James Faust fractured thigh J Parenti both hips fractured Ed Brown hip dislocated John Welch head badly cut E L Fash severo internal injuries John Palmer both i legs broken and internal injuries Ernest Scott internal injuries and head hurt Uboldo Maschult scalp wound and shoulder hurt John Delducalef hip broken and head injured Ed Martin leg broken and thiirh dislocated Mike Burke spine hurt David shberry internal hemorrhage The others are thought to be but slightly bruised There were a number of Italians in the party who were recently shipped I here from the east and a they are unable t speak the English language the Italian counsel Mr Rocaglia left here this morning morn-ing for Salida to be of any assistance to Ills countrymen possible it is not yet determined de-termined who is responsible for the accident acci-dent and an Investigation will be made at once The damage t the companies property prop-erty will be in the neighborhood of 513000 |
