| Show p IN A VERY BAD FIX 4 t V J K t r j L I The Situation Which the G 0 i of Idaho I tads Itself at Present V It BOISE q Cm SeptS 1890 y correspondence corre-spondence of THE HELu LnlIn the resent res-ent aspect of Idaho politics close questions of personal honor are arising It was well known when the Republican state convention conven-tion met that there were four aspirants forr seats in the United States Senate These I j I candididates were Delegate Dubois and Governor Shoup in South Idaho and William = Wil-liam J McConnell and William HClagett in North Idaho Between the former there was an open alliance between the latter there was none It appeared plain that if Shoup and Dubois together secured a majority ma-jority of the Republics members of the legislature and the Republican members asa I as-a whole obtained a majoritv of the senatrs and representatives Mess Shoup and Dubois would secure both the coveted seats and North Idaho get nothing To prevent the success of this partnership partner-ship the following resolution was passed by a vote of Gl to U9 Resolved That it is the sense of that convention con-vention that justice to all portions oly the state requires that one of the United States Senators to be elected by the first lefcislA ture of Idaho shall be from Northern Idaho > The friends of Governor Shoup earnestly antagonized this resolution They admitted that Governor Shoup was pledged to the support of Mr Dubois they said that it made the way plain for Mr Dubois but shut out Shoup and that if the governor accepted a renomination after the passage of this resolution and should be electedhe would be in honor bound to remain governor gover-nor and not try for the Senatorship In this view Governor Shoup hesitated long to accept the nomination for governor he declared before the convention that he made a most serious sacrifice in accepting and most plainly endorsed all tnathis friends had said in opposing the North Idaho senatorial resolution The North Idaho delegates went home with the clear I understanding that they had only to settle among themselves 1 whether Judge Clagett or Mr McConnell was to be senator one I of them was certainly to go if the Republicans Republi-cans had votes enough to elect anybody But the convention people had scarcely left the city before Governor Shoup asserted fenatorial candidacy and the firm of Shoup Dubois reentered business It iswellknowu that Colonel Shoup could not have Had even the nomination for governor gov-ernor had not the North Idaho resolution been passed and been practically assented assen-ted to by all the candi ates Republican mominees are supposed to be in honor bound by the decisions of Republican I conventions The state committee and its funds are in the hands of Mr Dubois and he is using vantage ground to support the DuboisShoup convention They arranged the mass meeting which was held at Sonnas opera house on Monday night The expenses were paid by the state committee com-mittee and among the expenses of that committee was the cost of printing a campaign cam-paign song of which the following in the closing stanza Our Senators of choice are boup andDubois And we glory in their valor day by day And just as sure as fate a Republican state Beneath the stary banner of the free The chows < choir prepared to sing this doggerel but at the last moment the song was ruled out I The meeting was not a success The attendance at-tendance was not over naif that which heard exCongressman Hills Democratic speech and the applause was weak The best friends of Dubois and Shoup are hopeful hope-ful in case of their election to the United States Senate that they will be content with political honors and not draw the laugh on Idaho by making speeches Allover All-over Idaho disgust is spreading and the result is increasing demoralization among Republicans The open candidacy of incompetent in-competent men is too much of a load for the G O P while the Democracy have nominees whom their enemiss can only praise |
