that hey shall be educated to a relish for the simple and unpretentious pleasures of life and the wishes of a great emperor in matters mat-ters of this kind are pretty sure to be respected re-spected by his entire household So it is that the children of the German imperial family gaze with delight on the bright and pretty trifles with which their tree is loaded down and their happiness is not for a moment I mo-ment dimmed by the suspicion that any better effect could be obtained from more costly or more elaborate ornaments Then hey turn to the small tables surrounding the tree There is one table for each member mem-ber of the imperial family and for each royal guest and on each one of these tables gifts are deposited Here too a charming simplicity rules the little princes for example ex-ample having an especial fondness for tin soldiers which they put through all manner man-ner of maneuvers as become the children of the ruling house of an empire famed forts for-ts military prowess and greatness They 3 r < Jt S > 5 J ifi I t r r 7 i tr I rt I t 1 1 r tl k1WF t = v Ii 1 11 1 et5 tIl f l ilkdPiJ g z rf 1 < i k < fYi fY-i FJjy f 1 1 rf nt 1 I N M fJ 1 < < 7J fi I < iii = ft 4 1J > will bo permitted to remain at the i table with his father thu Emperor until dinner is at an end but the other little I princes must go to bed lit 7 oclock as they Iwo still considered too young to room than one hour and thirty minutes I min-utes I utesAil the theatres in Berlin are closed on Christmas eve and even Santa Glaus seems I to have abandoned the good old habit he once had pf paving annual visits to the children of the German capital though in ho provinces good boys and girls still await with pleasurable anticipation and anxiety the visit which thoy know will be made to them by the Christkindchen Christ child In Berlin nowadays there is little or no mystery about Christmas gifts and the children generally know whom to thank for them It 11t4 o SAT TOUR TIIATERS On Christmas morning there are religious services in the cathedral at 10 oclock after which theb < 5ys of the cadet corps of the military school or such of them as have not gone home to spend the day with their own parents visit the castle where an entertainment en-tertainment is provided for them It is always al-ways sure to be of a most enjoyable char acter and has become very popular with I the cadets Young ladies of the noble families fam-ilies are also invited to be present and their presence adds greatly to tho interest of the occasion Christmas eve celebrations celebra-tions however in Berlin are always much more elaborate and generally participated in than are cBlebiations on Christmas day although the day throughout the German empire is of course kept from morning until night as a
