| Show I THE CHAMBER OF COMMERCE TJIE HCUALD is specially glad to see the endeavors which are being made to properly prop-erly furnish the new quarters of the chamber cham-ber of commerce It i fitting that an institution in-stitution which does so much to disseminate dissemi-nate information regarding the territory should ba adorned with the works of Utah wo1s artists and we do not think it would be a bad idea to have everything in and about the rooms it occupies the product of Utah brains and hands The chamber is tho pro gen of the whole community not any part of it or sect in it it is the one place in Salt Lake where men can meet and forget religious re-ligious or political animosities in their deliberations de-liberations for tho public weal I has done much good and can do much more and everything that will foster and stvengthun I it should receive whole souled and wholesale whole-sale encouragement The housewarming i itself now approaching should be made a notable occasion and the movement t secure se-cure means to fitly furnish the house preliminary pre-liminary to that event should be one that the whole public takes an interest in I While we are on tho sabjcct of the chamber I cham-ber it will not be out of place to note that presidents chair is now vacant and to voice the decided sentiment in the community commu-nity that the next man who fills it shall be first and foremost a strong commercial force we want around whom no one lingers the taint of the prolessionul politician or tho disfranchiser vie never had any use for the former and even Gentile Utah has shown that it repudiates the latter Let us have a man whether he is Mormon Jew or Gentile whose name commands the confidence of the community and who isnt afraid of work Governor WEST was very far from being the proper man he had no property interests here ho was unpopular with the majority he was absent a great deal of the time and his absence was largely due to his active sympathies with the atrocious disfranchisement measure How a man could return to Utah call a meeting of the chamber of commerce and expect the support of the very men whose dearest rights he had been laboring to takeaway take-away is something that none who had not had Governor WESTS early training could do The rock upon which the chamber has come nearest splitting in the past has been the acts 01 JAXUSfnced officials too intimately connected with the institution for its own good they should bo steered clear of now that they have been sighted and their danger appreciated |
