Show FINANCE AND MINING The Activity Incident to the Holiday Hol-iday Trade 1 SILVER IS INCLINING UPWARDS Henry Clews on the Financial Situation In tic EastNews From Many Mines Lead Quiet Trade in Salt Lake continues in the even way that is characteristic of this great and growing city There is the usual bustle incident t the retail holiday trade which commencing may be said to be oven now Retail dealers of holiday goods are my lutbority for this statement and it was oachcu by an increased showing in their daily receipts It is but little more than three weeks now until the great holiday of the world will bo upon us and the lively bid fair to be eclipsed scenes of a year ago eclpsed in every particular Yesterday was a remarkably re-markably busy Saturday Money continues close and collections I for the present month have not been asI good as at former periods of the ypar Real estate remains quiet and the fall boom predicted has shown only slight symptoms The building boom continues active how all it over and the tin bucket brigade has can attend to Miners and mineowners throughout the territory should not fail to remember the call of the chamber of commerce made a couple of weeks since for specimens information infor-mation etc to lay beloro tho worlds fair committee on mining which will shortly meet in Salt Lake and also visit some of the most important mining camps Stocks have been quiet and comparatively compara-tively few transactions have been recorded during the week just closed There has been some activity among the mills and smelters of the south of late the Barbec quartz mill at Silver Reef starting up for a short run and the Little Gem smelter at Bloomington is also in operation opera-tion Lead and Silver Lead opened on Monday at 460 and remained re-mained at that figure during the entire week Silver took an upward shoot closing last evening at 103 In New York lead has been hammered considerably and purchases were very generally indifferent There was a decline in values in both Chicago and St Louis The Financial Situation Of the eastern financial situation Henry Clews S Co havo this to say The general gen-eral financial situation is improving but with the marked conservatism that pro vails in every direction the recovery of confidence must be expected to be gradual and slow It is an encouraging symptom that considering the past severity ot the crisis so few failures have occurred on the stock exchange I is still more so that the vigilance of the clearing house with regard to the standing of its members has disclosed such a generally sound condition of the banks and that the numerous other iinnncial institutions have exhibited no signs of weakness This is the most satisfactory evidence that the speculative derangements from which we are suffering have not appreciably apprecia-bly involved our credit establishments which will prove to be an element of very great value in the coming process of recovery recov-ery Another favorable factor is that the course of affairs in Wall street has not involved in-volved any suffering to interior interests beyond a partial check to the free movement move-ment of commercial credit For the remainder re-mainder of the year merchants will be inconvenienced in-convenienced from the stringency of discounts dis-counts but it is reasonable to expect that with the opening of the new year the natural nat-ural reaction from the present severe strain will bring money t this city while the great fall in stocks will reduce tho amount colat to bo borrowe on that important class of On the Edge of a Boom The president of one of the more important impor-tant banks of Kew YorK in a letter written to a southern bank president lately said We havo had a tempestuous time here for a long while past The worst is over however so the most conservative members of the clearing house believe an opinion in which I concur Lots of exceptional excep-tional circumstances have contributed tote to-te stringency which has impaired us during dur-ing recent months Those circumstances I believe will rebound re-bound t our benefit very speedily I look for a money market this winter in whch while loaners will get fair and remunerative remunera-tive rates for funds there will be no oppression op-pression for borrowers The stock markets mar-kets course is hardly within my province to predict though in common with other students of the situation I believe that the worst is over Certainly very many indeed tho majority major-ity of stocks dealt in on tho stock exchange are selling below what we have hitherto believed to be their intrinsic values I is undoubtedly true as Val street has charged that money has been locked up largely in this and some other centres The motives which induced this speculative operation op-eration are however 1 believe no longer active The enterprises of which you write me I think will be much more likely to get a fair hearing and probable accommodation this winter than they would have been apt to receive at any time during the past two years As I view it and this is the opinion of most of my fellows in the clearing house association we are upon the edge of a great financial boom The Cattle and Sheep Ranges Owing to the great scarcity of feed upon the cattle ranges of Beaver and adjoining countries cattle owners are being necessitated necessi-tated by sneer stress of circumstances to seek other and more luxuriant ranges for their animals says the Ulonian The cause of this trouble is the many herds of sheep belonging not only to our own citizens but also coming from Sanpete counties where the feed upon tho public ranges even for sheep has been entirely depleted and in many cases completely killed out by the close feeding The consequence is as regards re-gards sheep that large herds are annually driven down from the before mentioned counties on to our cattle ranges with the result as we have before rnngs of tho cattle cat-tle herds being now compelled to migrate t better feeding grounds either in this or adjoining states and territories The Low Cattle company is among the firms compelled com-pelled to seek another location and they accordingly Wednesday last had a herd of 600 head of cattle driven south probably into Arizona on a search for better and more permanent pasturage The Yardley Brothers and others will doubtless follow 1 with their herds and soon Beaver county will be in no better condition as regards feed than arc the counties north NEWS FROM TIE MINES
