| Show MUNICPAL MATTERS Mr Ryans Plan for Supplying the North Bench with Water IT WILL PROBABLY BE ADOPTED The Widening of State Street That Land PurchaseThe Fire Department The numbers Must Toe the Mark The request of the north bench people for the extension of the water mains to the tract of land situated north of Ninth street is still in the hands of the committee on waterworks and prospects are that the benchers will soon get the relief prayed Superintendent of Wateworks Ryan while not opposing the plan proposed by some members of the council to run a main from the Emigration pipe line reservoir on Thirteenth East street to the bench thinks there is another plan which would be more economical and equally satisfactory The Twentyfirst Ward district is supplied by an independent main from City creek and Mr Ryan says that the wooden pipes leading lead-ing from the cauon are in very bad condition condi-tion and will have to be repaired at once In order to make them serviceable at all it is necessary to wrap them with cloth and ho thinks the repairs should be delayed no longer When this work is done he suggests sug-gests that the line be extended up the cafion half a mile as by this means sufficient pressure would bo obtained to carry the water on to the bench and it would improve the service around When this is done all the petitioners would have to do would be to extend a branch from toe main as it is situated to their lands The superintendent superin-tendent thinks the whole job could be com pleted within a short time In the meantime the bench people are anxiously awaiting a report from the committee com-mittee and as soon as they have the assurance assur-ance that they will get the relief sought the work of improving the bench will be at once commenced The plan suggested by Mr Ryan appears to be an eminently practicable prac-ticable one which could be carried out without infringing upon the claims of any other section and it would certainly be a godsend to the bench people and a benefit to the material welfare of the city Plumbers Must Toe the Mark The action of the council on Tuesday night in promptly revoking the license of Plumber Rush for violating the ordinance on work done by him at the opera house shows that the council intends to make the plumbers toe the mark and do their work in proper mauntr The City Bonds The committed on finance is now at work getting up a design for the 303000 of city bonds soon to be issued These bonds will be advertised for sale from December 15 untilJanuary 15 and the bids received will be opened at 10 am on the latter day Widening First East Street It appears that the supposition that the council had definitely determined to widen State street north of the Eagle gate by condemning abutting lands was an error In connection with the proposition to widen the street an offer was received f ftn M4 n hnmn ftn tn snlI tn tlin nitv n tract of land at the head of State street for 10000 This proposition was accepted and the protest against the widening of the street was tabled on the same night and it was this which gave rise to the supposition that the protest would not be considered As a matter of fact however there is no fear of the proposition to widen the street being carried out at least for some time so the property owners above the Eagle gate may rest easy That land Purchase No statement was made in the council on Tuesday night as to the location of the 961 acres of land which the council agreed to purchase from the Union Pacific for 14 1541 or the purpose for which the lands were bought It was learned yesterday that the land is situated in City Creek and Emigration cafions and it was bought in in order to protect the citys water right The Fire Department The committee on fire department now has 3300 to expend in equipping the department de-partment with additional horses harness stoves etc The new engine houses are nearly ready for occupancy and the eight additional firemen will be selected in a short time |
