| Show I 1 BURGLARY AND ARSON I A Narrow Escape From a Big Fire at American Fork DISCOVERED IN THE NICK OF TIME The Salt Lake Toughs Getting in Their Work on Outside Towns Happenings Happen-ings at Hebcr Alfred Dunldeys store at American Fork had a very narrow escape from a big fire a few nights ago When the proprietor proprie-tor went to open up in tho morning he found two lights of glass and the intervening inter-vening sash broken from his front door This gave room for an ordinary man to pass through without difficulty Inside was the smell of fire and investigation developed de-veloped facts which prove that the store was a prey to some burglar The showcases show-cases and clothing department seem to have received most attention after no money could be found and thus far one adults suit and one boys suit of clothes with some flannel shirts and jewelry have been missing The ashes of several cotton shirts were found on the floor just under the water tank and the floor was still on fire beneath Not the slightest draft was afforded or no doubt the entire building with three or four immediate neighbors would have been in ashes before morning It is supposed the burglar had a candle which ho propped up by means of these shirts and that the shirts took fire accidentally la his hurry perhaps the intruder in-truder dropped them under the tank and dropped water oa them but not sufficient to extinguish all the lire The fire kept on smouldering till S oclock am when it was found to nave eaten a hole anout six inches in diameter through the floor and was slowly gaining ground There was not the slightest draft from beneath and tne broken window being in another room gave rise to no circulation above There isms yet no clue upon which any certainty can be built but some suspicion sus-picion rests on a certain party whose presence pres-ence demanded attention Friday and Saturday about the burglarized store but whose wherebouts now is unknown Happenings at liebcr Weather fine for this time of the year Mr John W Young and a Mr Wells were in Heber the fore part of last week Mr Job Luke and Miss Sopha Clyde were married last Wednesday at the residence resi-dence of the brides parents Judge Watson Wat-son performed the ceremony We wish the young couple a pleasant journey through lifeThere There has been considerable sikness in town of late owing ti the condition of the weather Whooping cough is quite preve lent among the children and we have had several cases of scarlet fever Thanksgiving week fias been a lively one for Heber Amusements begun Tuesday evening at the theatre with Uncle Toms Cabin It was very well played though on a small scale The Heber Brass band gave a masquerade masque-rade ball Wednesday night and were in attendance at-tendance in tneirnew uniform which gave them quite a grand appearance Thanksgiving services were held in the stake house Thursday morning and the town was made lively in the afternoon oy beautiful strains of music rendered by the brass band The band boys certainly deserve credit for their energy and perseverance perse-verance They are progressing very nicely There were two parties tLat evening one in Turners hall for the young folks and a picnic party in the Heber hall for the older people both being somewhat disturbed dis-turbed by the announcement that marshals I were in tONn they made quite a sweep here and as near as we are able to learn those who were arrested are as follows Bishop Clegc J W Witt John M Mur floek and E Buys of Heber and J Bergner and H North of Midway Dec 1 1890 MINIMUM |
