| Show THE COURT AT PROVO Curtis Tried for Horse Stealing and Acquitted Humrill will Also Have a Chance PKOVO Feb 20 1S90 The court convened con-vened at 930 Wednesday morning The case of Amos Carl and others against Joel Grover et a1 was called and submitted submit-ted tedThe The names of jurors summoned special venire were called and J W Moore waste was-te only one answering He was sworn and examined as to his qualifications but could not subscribe to all the articles of faith and he was excused The case of the People against Charles Curtis and one Rumrill 3was called for trial on an indictment for grand larceny M M Kellogg who had been appointed by he court to conduct the defense asked for a continuance on the ground he had not had o pportunity to consult his clientsand also aso on the ground that an important witness was not nresent Mr Kellogg stated the acts he expected to prove by the absent witness Attorney Evans was willing to admit t he facts as if proved Mr Kellogg then asked a separate trial for Curtis which was granted I A jury was empanelled and the trial commenced the indictment charging the charng prisoners with stealing four horses was read and several witnesses examined The case was given to the jury toward night and a verdict of not guilty broughtin later This morning at 10 oclock the grand jury came in and reported they had gnored the cases against Niels Frandsen Christian Jensen and one Gunderson or some such name The clerk called the names of jurors for whom the special venire was issued on Monday not one answering answerng A recess was taken tills pm OTHER MATTERS The sum of comments hQre on the Utah commissions ruling on our city election cases is I told you so The outgoing city council has done all that could be expected toward establishing system of electric lights The matter of accepting bids for a city hall is left for the new city council to cnnsider If new additions tend to build up a city Provo is bound to get there There are now several new additions already on the market These newly platted city lots are becoming so numerous they will interfere somewhat with farming in the immediate vicinity of town Mr R H Dodd has his new residence one block west of the Roberts house nearly completed and it presents a very handsome appearance The design is orig inal in some respects with a tower at the northeast corner and cupola over the south front and though the building is but two stories it makes a more imposing appear I ance than some three or four story build ings In the first place Mr Dodd selected a low marshy lot to build on and then hauled gravel to grade the lot up four or five feet Now that he has the building nearly complete with necessary foot walks and outhouses he proposes to cover the entire lot with soil and make for himself one of the finest garden lawns to be found anywhere |
