Show THE MINORITY REPORT Representative MAXSUK of Missouri who speaks for the Democratic members of tho House committee on territories presents pre-sents a minority report against the admission admis-sion of Idaho as a state and it is a powerful power-ful and statesmanlike document which he offers A very fair synopsis of the paper appeared as a special telegram in Thursdays Thurs-days issue of Tan HCUALD The gentle man and his associates are not opposed to statehood for Idaho They are willing that the territory shall be emancipated and taken into the union as a sovereign state and may be relied upon to vote for admission when the dependency shall come up with a propsr constitution con-stitution It is tho constitution under which Idaho asks to be admitted that the minority objects to the offensive provision being that which disfranchises on account of membership in the Mormon church MAXSUlt and colleagues are not sympathizers sympathiz-ers with Mormons nor believers in the rightfulness of polygamy on the contrary Democrats generally have been as keen as Republicans to punish for the offense named thny have voted for all tho antipolygamy bills and have never been behind their political opponents in proceeding to extreme ex-treme lengths in the matter of punishment punish-ment But they do object to the imposition of punishment where no offense has boon committed and will not say its is right to deprive a man of citizenship without a hearing or even charging him with crime The purest minded mini in Idaho the most upright one in his walk and tne most moral one if he were a member of the Mormon church would under tti e proposed constitution be deprived of the right to vote or hold office A Democrat cannot sanction such a principle princi-ple hence the opposition of MA sun and associates to the admission of the territory terri-tory named until the constitution has been brought into harmony with the theory of the American government Tim HERALD while it applauds the honesty and tho courage of the gentlemen forming the minority of the committee on territories places very little faith in tho success of their opposition to the admission bill The Republican party is desperate It realizes that the struggle of its life will soon be here Failure to carry Congress and the Presidency in 1892 would mean the beginning of tho end of the Republican party The admission of Idaho under the proposed constitution will give the party one Representative and two Senators and three votes in tho electoral college tho admission of tho territory with the objectionable objec-tionable and unrepublican provision omitted omit-ted would be to make it a Democratic state This condition of things decides Republicans Republic-ans without further consideration or discussion dis-cussion The state must be created and it must be certainly Republican in politics The Democrats in Congress can enter their protest and placo themselves right in the record but they cannot prevent the perpetration of tho political crime which is contemplated in the admission of Idaho with a criminal constitution |
