Show DIRECTOR OF rriI CENSUS Colonel C D Wricht is Not a Candidate But It Maybe Porter or Weeks Special to the HEIIALD Examiner Dispatch WASHINGTON April IThe President will probably nominate a superintendent of the census this week The friends of Robert P Porter the editor of the New York Press have been pressing his name earnestly and the President has several earesty sever times been on the point of nominating him He has been deterred by the earnestness of the supporters of Joseph D Weeks of Pittsburg who have urged that their candidate can-didate was better equipped by experience and by aptitude for statistical inquiries than the New Yorker Mr Weeks prepared pre-pared volume twenty of tho last census relating re-lating to wages and the cost of production and also the essay on coke He is editor cf the Manufacturers Gazette and in 1SS4 was treasurer of the Republican national Republcn natona committee com-mittee He is well spoken of by those who aro familiar with the sort of ability required re-quired in the head of the census He is supported by tho Pennsylvania Senators Sena-tors and Representatives and by tho prominent manufacturers of the state The President would have liked to appoint Colonel Carroll D Wright of Massachusetts to take charge of the census work but Colonel Wright was not a candidate as the President was unwilling to take him from the department of labor both because of the excellent record he is making there and because of the contest that would arise for the place The President Presi-dent has said to gentlemen who have talked with him on tho subject that he was thoroughly thor-oughly satisfied with the work Colonel Wright has been doing in tho department of labor and he proposed if he kept on in his the administration samp Hues to keep him there throughout |
