Show A TRAGEDY The Catholi Bishop of Alaska Murdered HIS SLAYER UNDER ARREST SesUoJ Seizures An Eye on Hawaii The Colorado Influx Boom Other Mews Notes Bishop Alaska Murdered SAN FRANCISCO July 18 Information Informa-tion was received tjday from Ouna laska that Bishop Leghero Catholic missionary was murdered by his companion I com-panion on the night of November 30th The scene of the tragedy was on the banks of the Youkon River about 500 miles from its mouth and fully sixty miles from any human habitation The murderer Frank Fuller a young man from Portland Ogn who accompanied the bishop as companion and servant He gave himself up but no cause for the deed is given The murderer is now in Sitka where he will be tried The bishop was formerly of Baltimore Md and prior to being named Bishop of Alaska was arch bishop of Oregon and Washington Territory He left for Alaska last summer to perform per-form missionary work among the Indians In-dians but was allowed by the Papal See to retain his honorary title qf archbishop arch-bishop SAN FRANCISCO July lBBy the Alaska Commercial Companys steamer Dora which came in today from Oun alaska information is received of the seizure of two vessels for sealing within the limits prescribed by the United titates government The crafts are the American schooner Challenge thirty tons from Seattle and the British steam schooner Annie Beck hailing from Victoria Both seizures were made by the United States revenue cutter Richard Rush and the vessels and crews were sent on to Sitka The Challenge was taken July 1st in Ekeston Onekston Island When overhauled by the Rush no seals were to be seen but there was blood on the de k and other evidences that the crew had been engaged in sealing The Rush took charge of her in spite of the protest of the captain who said that every akin he had was obtained in the open waters of the Pacific The Rush took the prize to Ounalaska Two days later the Annie Bed was seized neat 5t Georges which is not far from Onnalaak As in the case of the Challenge there was blood on the deck and the crew appeared as if they had been hard at it Her captain sent up a protest and threatened to seek redress from the British government govern-ment He was likewise sent off to Sitka where he as well as the American Ameri-can captain will be tried When the Dora departed from OunalasKa there was a fleet of twenty sealers hovering off Sanack under the espionage of the Rush and others were reported at Unge and the officers of the Rush were in need of assistance The Bear has gone to the Arctic waters I A n Eye on Hawaii NEW YORK July lSA Washington special says the tender of a United States vessel as a convoy to the queen of the Hawaiian Islands is more than mere courtesy Our government will send trusted officers with tne ship and I undoubtedly new instructions to commanders com-manders of our navalvessels which should be at Honolulu If there is any need for immediate communication with our authorities the coast survey steamer Hassler which is to act as a convoy con-voy will at once return to the United States as the bearer Government feels the nee8 ot more speedy steamers and it is thought wise to have the best sailing sail-ing vessel at the dispostion of our representatives rep-resentatives on the island The absence of telegraphic communication at this juncture will unuoubtedly result in a movement to secure cable connection with Hawaii at an early day Some friends of Carter representative of the Hawaiian government are of the opinion that he may be recalled to serve as prime minister and to form a new cabinet All admit that Kalakaua can onlv retain the crown by acting as a mere fignrehead and by carrying out the wishes foreigners who really control con-trol the affairs of the island and who represent the wealth and industries The Colorado Influx Boom DENVER July lSThe railroad officials offi-cials say that never before have so many people of the better class and apparently of plenty of means come into the State as this season Many engage in agriculture and dairying while others go into the mining districts dis-tricts or remain in the cities On account ac-count of the tremendous number of inquiries in-quiries for information concerning Denver Den-ver and Colorado at the various public offices the Chamber of Commerce and Board of Trade are having instituted a bureau of information which will have charge of this matter relatively thereto and especially of emigration from various var-ious parts of this country and Europe |
